Abstract
The road spray removers consist of a front and back unit, which acts as a replacement for cycle mudguards, it achieves its function by brushing the water directly off the tyres. The unit consists of a body which contains groups of bristles 17, which are inclined at an angle towards the rotation of the wheel, this helps to reduce the friction on the tyre as well as assisting in the removal of water. The body of the unit 12 contains drain-slots situated in-between the bristles to expel the water. The unit is attached to the cycle frame 16 by two stays 10 which are allowed to pivot freely at the frame connection, allowing it to engage with the tyre, and to be disengaged by rotating it up and clipping it to the frame. <IMAGE>
Description
ROAD-SPRAY REMOVER FOR BICYCLE
This invention relates to a replacement for the mudguards on a bicycle.
Mudguards have been around almost as longs the bicycle itself, but in recent years for technical and fashion reasons there use is in decline. Most new sports, and all-terrain bicycles are no longer fitted with mudguards of any description.
The present invention approaches the problem of road-spray not by catching it after it leaves the tyres but by brushing it directly off the tyres.
For the rest of the description the road spray removers will be referred to as the units or unit.
The unit consists of a body which contains four equally spaced groups of bristles, the bristles are inclined at an angle towards the rotation of the wheel, this helps to reduce the friction on the tyre and assists the removal of water. The body of the unit contains drain-slots in-between the four banks of bristles to expel the water. The unit is attached to the frame by two stays which are allowed to pivot freely at the frame connection.
Figure 1 shows unit on rear wheel in the on, and off position
Figure 2 shows detail of unit; bristles, drain-holes, and stays.
Referring to the drawing the unit consists of the main body 12 which holds bristles 17, the bristles would be of a hard wearing material, nylon, rubber etc. and set at an angle of 45 degrees in the direction of the rotation of the wheel. In between the four rows of bristles there are drain-slots 18, the unit could also be used to mount a rear reflector 14 as illustrated in Fig 2.
The unit is connected to the frame by the stays 10, the stays pivot at the fastening to the frame 16, this allows the unit to drop onto the wheel under its own weight ( the on position ).
The unit can be disengaged by lifting the unlt off the wheel and attaching it to a clip 15 mounted on the frame near the brake ( the off position ).
Claims (3)
1 A road spray remover unit tone of a pair front and rear) consisting of a body which contains four equally spaced groups of bristles, the bristles are inclined at an angle towards the rotation of the wheel, to reduce the friction on the tyre and assists the removal of water.
The body of the unit contains drain-slots in-between the four banks of bristles to expel the water. The unit is attached to the frame by two stays which are allowed to pivot freely at the frame connection.
2 A road spray remover unit as claimed in claim 1 that has an attachment which allows it to be clipped to the bicycle frame on or near the brake-mount, thereby disengaging the unit.
3 A road spray remover unit as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 (rear unit only) that has a large red rear reflector mounted on it.
