Description

DISPLAY WALLING This invention relates to display walling particularly for installation in retail store wall displays, department store windows, showrooms, reception areas, exhibitions, offices, boar dr oom s, hotel areas, r e s ta u r a nt s, public buildings etc.
One known display wall comprises standard size 2400mum x 1200mum (8' x 4') planar panels of timber or board across which a slot (extending horizontally when the panel is installed) more usually a series of spaced-apart, parallel slots are routed to a profile to accept a pre-fitted, aluminium alloy extrusion, with a walling secured against a support structure e.g., a brick wall, by a plurality of screws passing through a back wall of the extrusion into the support structure, the extrusion(s) serving for the insertion of ends of brackets etc. for shelving etc. The extrusions are usually fixed at 150mm spacings, which may or may not be convenient. Also, the standardised panel size means that, when erected upright, there is a vertical joint every 8ft.
Also, the outer surface of the panel is usually provided with a coloured veneer or other surface finish, resulting in total walling replacement when a change of colour schene and/or finish is required. Finally, even with shelving etc.
attached, at least some of the fixing screws are inevitably visible.
According to the present invention, there is provided display walling comprising a standard size planar panel of timber, board, synthetic plastics or some other workable material, at least one slot routed across the panel, hollow section elongate extrusions adapted to be retro-fitted along the slot(s) and having spaced-apart ribs projecting from the panel, with mutually opposite surfaces of the ribs being adapted to support a facia sheet applied to the adjacent surface of the panel, and with the ribs projecting from the panel by a distance approximating to the thickness of the facia sheet.
Thus, with the display walling in accordance with the invention, as the extrusions are retro-fitted, any receiving slots initially routed but found inconvenient can be masked and fresh slots routed. Clearly, the profiles of the slots and extrusions must be such that any extrusion can be retrofitted with relative ease, yet be a good fit within the slot to avoid inadvertent loss or separation. The latter may be avoided by providing each slot with an undercut and the extrusion with a flange adapted to engage the undercut for positive, rather than simply frictional, retention of the extrusion within its slot. Thus, this aspect of the invention provides for the fitting of extrusions in optimum locations to meet the customers individual requirements, in contrast to prior art proposals where the customer must adapt to pre-fitted extrusions, which also results in reduced installation time.
Also, securing of the walling to a support structure e.g., a brick or concrete wall need not be by screws passing through the extrusions, but can be through the panel at optimum or convenient locations to the filter because, provided the screw heads are suitably countersunk, they are totally obscured by the subsequently applied facia sheet.
Although the facia sheet could be a frictional fit between the projecting ribs of adjacent extrusions, tight tolerances are demanded, which requirement is avoided if the facia sheets are secured by adhesive. It follows that when a colour scheme change is required, only the facia panels need be stripped from the wall, the latter remaining in situ ready to receive the fresh facia sheets. Furthermore, facia sheets are available in sizes substantially exceeding standard panels. This means that, by the use of maximum sized facia sheets, the many joints between adjacent edges of adjacent panels can be obscured with the only joints being the fewer ones between the facia sheets. The projecting ribs may slightly exceed the thickness of the facia e.g. by lmm.
Different facia sheets can be affixed to the same backing panel to provide a mural or other effect, or generally to mix and match differing facia sheets, even to the extent of facia sheets being constituted by mirrors, natural and synthetic stone, tiles, wallpapers, suede, leathers, vinyls, metal laminates, fabrics, veneers, natural timber, glass, acrylics, plastics and lamminates, paint etc.
Finally, the ends of the end panels may be closed off by end caps e.g., an elongate extension of 'L' section e.g.
aluminium secured by screws or adhesive.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a vwertical sectional view through display walling in accordance with the invention, and Figure 2 is an end view, to an enlarged scale, of the extrusion of Figure 2.
In the drawings, display walling 1 can be seen to comprise a standard size planar panel 2, e.g. of 2400mum x 1200mum and 16mm thickness and constituting in fact a back panel. The panel 2 may be of timber, board, synthetic plastics or some other workable material. A plurality of horizontal, parallel and spaced-apart slots 3 each with an undercut 4, are routed across the panel.
Into the slots 3 are retro-fitted the hollow section, elongate extrusions 5, best seen in Figure 2. The extrusion 5 is generally of square "C"-shape and provided with two ribs 6 projecting from the panel 2, e.g. by 6.5mm, and being spaced apart, e.g. by 18mum, to provide an access gap 7 into the hollow interior 8 for the securing of fixings such as shelf brackets (not shown). The extrusion 5 has a back wall 9, e.g. of 25mm height, and top and bottom walls 1 and 11 respectively, e.g. of lmm height. From the top wall 1 projects a flange 12, e.g. of 5mm height adapted to be received in, and to abut, the undercut 4 so as to provide for positive retention of the extrusion 5 within the slot 3.
As shown in Figure 1, between mutually opposite faces 13 of adjacent ribs 6 of adjacent extrusions 5, is a facia sheet 14, e.g. of 6mm thickness, secured by adhesive at adjacent panel surfaces 15 at the interface. However, before affixing the facia sheet 14, the display walling 1 is secured to a concrete wall 16 by drilling through the panel 2, before application of the facia sheet 14, into the wall 16 at suitable screw location positions. The walling 1 is then removed for completion of drilling of the holes 17 in the wall and insertion of plugs 18, and for countersinking of the holes in the panel 2. The walling is then re-presented to the wall 16 and fixed by screws 19, after which the facia sheet 14 is attached.
