Abstract

The invention allows two round tubes 1, 2 one inside the other to be extended and locked in position without the aid of external securing. Rubber bush 7 is expanded by nylon cone 8 into locking engagement with outer tube 1 under the influence of compression spring 6 and released by pressure on bar 3 via rod 4. <IMAGE>

Description

ROUND TUBE LOCKING DEVICE UNDER COMPRESSION This invention relates to the temporary locking in compression of one round tube inside another at any level.
Means available at present involve thumb screws, camlock devices or pins to secure one round tube inside another.
According to the present invention there is provided a means whereby one round tube inside another can be secured at variable heights without the assistance of thumb screws, camlock devises or pins.
A specific embodiment will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows sectional view of the said tubes in rest position ie. locked.
Figure 2 shows sectional view of the said tubes in unlocked position.
Refering to the drawings, the devise comprises of: An outer tube 1. with an inner tube 2. blanked off at base 2A with centre hole for passage of Control Rod 4. Control Bar 3. Control Rod Washer 5. Compression Spring 6. Rubber Bush 7. Nylon Cone 8.
In order to extend the inner tube 2 to the required position, hold outer tube 1 firmly in one hand and using free hand extend inner tube 2 to required position.
The inner tube 2 can not now be depressed into the outer tube 1.
In order to depress inner tube 2 into outer tube 1 it is necessary to hold outer tube 1 firmly with one hand and with one finger of free hand press control bar 3 back towards outer tube 1 until the required position is reached.
During the operating procedure the locking mechanism functions as follows: When the said tubes are at rest ie. locked under compression as illustrated in Figure 1. The rubber bush 7 is expanded to make full internal surface contact with the inner wall of the outer tube 1 by the nylon cone 8 being drawn up by the compression spring 6 acting against the control rod washer 5 which is fixed to the control rod 4.
When the said tubes are free ie. unlocked, under compression as illustrated in Figure 2.
The control bar 3 is drawn back towards outer tube 1, the nylon cone 8 is retracted from the rubber bush 7 by means of a direct link between control bar 3 and nylon cone 8 made by control rod 4.
As the nylon cone 8 is retracted from the rubber bush 7 thus allowing the rubber bush 7 to contract slightly and therefore lose contact with the inner walls of the outer tube 1.
There is now no friction and the said tubes can be drawn back together.

Claims (5)

1 As a means of securing two round tubes one inside the other without external means of fastening.
2 As a means of securing two round tubes one inside the other as claimed in claim 1 wherein the lines of the said tube are unbroken and therefore more aesthetically pleasing.
3 As a means of securing two round tubes one inside the other as claimed in claim 1 which during the extension procedure the said tubes can not accidently retract as invention is always in the locked position until the control bar 3 is depressed.
4 As a means of securing two round tubes one inside the other, the locked position is not acheived by the tightening of any part and therefore can be released with minimal effort, unlike thumb screws which can be over-tightened.
5 As a means of securing two round tubes one inside the other as claimed in claim 4, there is no possibility of the invention damaging the form of either tube and resulting in malfunction, as could happen with thumb screws.
