Description
BANDAGE
This invention relates to a bandage, e.g. for temporary repair of hoses or pipes, for binding items together, or for medical use.
The invention provides a bandage in the form of a strip having, adjacent one end, a fixing portion, one side of which has a multiplicity of loops and the other side of which has a multiplicity of hooks for engaging the loops.
The invention will be described further, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a bandage;
Figure 2 is a view in the direction of arrow II in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 shows the bandage wrapped around a pipe.
The bandage 1 is in the form of a strip (e.g. 2 cm wide and 35 cm long). Over at least half of its length, the bandage consists of a resiliently stretchable non-permeable material 11, such as natural or synthetic rubber (e.g. inner-tube rubber), preferably reinforced. At one end the bandage has a fixing portion 2, one side of which has a multiplicity of loops 3 and the other side of which has a multiplicity of hooks 4. In the illustrated embodiment, the fixing portion 2 is non-stretchable and comprises "Velcro loop tape 6 and "Velcro" hook tape 7 adhesively joined back-to-back ("Velcro" being a registered trade mark). Where the fixing portion 2 is connected to the material 11, the tapes 6,7 are parted and adhesively joined to the material 11.
In a modified embodiment (not shown), the area provided with hooks extends only part-way along the fixing portion from its free end.
To seal a leak in a pipe 8, the free end of the stretchable material 11 is applied to the pipe and the bandage 1 is wrapped around the pipe in overlapping turns under tension so as to cover and seal the leak. Finally, the wrapped bandage is fastened by winding the fixing portion 2 tightly around the pipe 8, as shown in Figure 3, so that the hooks 4 engage the loops 3.
For medical use, e.g. for splinting or for dressing a wound, a permeable material may be used instead of the non-permeable material 11.
The bandage may be wound around two or more items so as to be bind them together.
Claims (9)
1. A bandage in the form of a strip having, adjacent one end, a fixing portion, one side of which has a multiplicity of loops and the other side of which has a multiplicity of hooks for engaging the loops.
2. A bandage as claimed in claim 1, in which the strip has, adjacent its other end, a resiliently stretchable portion.
3. A bandage as claimed in claim 2, in which the resiliently stretchable portion occupies at least half the length of the bandage.
4. A bandage as claimed in claim 2 or 3, in which the resiliently stretchable portion is non-permeable.
5. A bandage as claimed in any of claims 2 to #, in which the resiliently stretchable portion is of rubber.
6. A bandage as claimed in any of claims 2 to 5, in which the fixing portion comprises a loop tape and a hook tape joined back-to-back, the resiliently stretchable portion having an end part sandwiched between the tapes and adhesively joined to them.
7. A bandage as claimed in any preceding claim in combination with at least one item around which the bandage is wrapped in overlapping turns with the fixing portion outermost, the hooks being engaged with the loops to fasten the bandage.
8. A method of bandaging at least one item, comprising the steps of wrapping a bandage as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6 around the at least one item in overlapping turns with the fixing portion outermost, and engaging the hooks with the loops to fasten the bandage.
9. A bandage substantially as described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawings.
