Abstract
A method for the disposal of waste packaging eg for recycling, provides packaging materials of various types which are colour coded to indicate the principal material content, eg. paper, cardboard, plastics, aluminium, steel, and containers, eg plastics bags or skips, for receiving the waste packaging material, the containers being colour coded to correspond to the packaging colour coding.
Description
DISPOSAL OF WASTE PACKAGING
The present invention relates to the disposal of waste packaging, and other materials, and has as its aim the provision of a system which will encourage people to take part in the recycling of waste materials by making it easier to do so, and which will also enhance the value of the recyclable material.
A first aspect of the invention provides a method for the disposal of waste packaging, and other materials, the method comprising the steps of providing packaging material which is olour coded to indicate the material type, and providing a plurality of containers which are colour coded to correspond to the colour code of the material.
The method of the invention is particularly applicable to the collection of domestic rubbish, but may also be used to advantage for collecting rubbish from small business, factories and other industrial users.
For efficient recycling of waste materials, it is necessary to divide the material according to type such as paper, plastic or metal, and even to sub-divide the types: newsprint, magazines, cardboard, recyclable or non-recyclable plastics; aluminium or steel cans, etc.
This places a considerable burden on the domestic consumer with the result that waste materials are poorly sorted, if at all, or that the consumer finds the whole process too burdensome and takes no part in it.
By colour coding materials, particularly packaging materials, which form the bulk of domestic rubbish, the need for decisions by the consumer is removed and the only action needed is to match the colour coded material to a colour coded container.
In a particularly preferred form, the method may be used by local authorities or other agencies responsible for the collection or disposal of waste.
The packaging material manufacturer will code the material according its (principal) type, and the local authority provides households with a collection of plastic bags bearing a corresponding preferably the same, colour code. A bag might, for example, carry to codes to collect, say, both aluminium and steel cans.
With domestic refuse pre-sorted in this way the local authority may easily recycle, or sell for recycling, the collected material.
Central refuse collection points may have large, colour coded containers such as skips.
Various modifications may be apparent to those in the art and it is desired to include all such modifications as fall within the scope of the invention herein.
Claims (10)
1. A method for the disposal of waste packaging, and other materials, the method comprising the steps of providing packaging material which is colour coded to indicate the material type, and providing a plurality of containers which are colour coded to correspond to the colour code of the material.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the containers are in the form of bags.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the containers are or include skips.
4. A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the containers are distributed to domestic premises.
5. A method as claimed in claim 4, wherein the filled containers are distributed according to their code for recycling of their contents.
6. A method as claimed in any one of claim 1 to 5, including the recycling of material of any one or more types.
7. A method for the disposal of waste material, substantially as hereinbefore described.
8. Packaging material which is provided with a colour code to indicate the type, or principal type of the material, such as paper, plastics, alumimium, etc.
9. Containers for the collection of the waste packaging materials of claim 8, the containers being colour coded to correspond to the colour coded packaging materials.
10. Plastic bags for waste materials which bags are colour coded according to the type of material to be put in them.
