Abstract

224,163. Quartz et Silice. Nov. 2, 1923, [Convention date]. Forming silica-glass articles.-A method of forming articles of fused silica, or of glass hav. ing a high silica content, consists in melting the silica in actual contact with a mould, of refractory and conducting material, which is raised to a high temperature by the induction of highfrequency electric currents. Fig. 4 shows in section a device for making insulators. A charge b of sand, rock crystal, or other suitable material, is placed in a mould a<3> of graphite having a graphite core a<8>. The mould is placed in a container c of insulating material, such as porcelain, micanite, or silica, and is packed around with charcoal, lamp black, or other suitable heat insulator f. A copper or aluminium tube d through which water is circulated, is coiled around the outer surface of the container c, and this tube is traversed by an alternating current of high frequency, say 40000 per second, produced by known means such as an arc or spark generator, high frequency alternator, or thermionic valves. The heat generated in the mould by induction fuses the charge of sand. Articles of various shapes can be produced and can be pressed or blown. Small lenses for optical purposes can be made in a crucible a<4>, Fig. 5, fitted with a plunger a<5> both provided with moulding spaces for shaping a piece of silica g. The container c is provided with a tightly-fitting cover to enable fusion to be carried out in vacuo or in an atmosphere of any suitable gas.
