Abstract
A card has a printed front sheet 2 bonded to a printed rear sheet 4. The rear sheet 4 has a surface layer 14 coated on the underside with a pressure sensitive adhesive, and a backing layer 16 coated on the side which contacts the surface layer 14 with an adhesive release. Shapes 10 are die cut into the surface layer 14 to form a self adhesive label for sticking onto the front shoot 2. The front sheet 2 is divided by a perforation 8 into a border region 3 and a detachable interior section 6 which forms the face of a postcard. Interior section 6 is also coated with an adhesive release so that the shapes 10 can be removed. <IMAGE>
Description
TITLE:
Printed Matter Card Assemblies
DESCRIPTION
Technical Field
The invention relates co printed matter of special format, and particularly to postcards; greeting, menu, business or like cards.
Background Art
Postcards, greeting and like cards generally consist of a sheet of card or stiff paper upon which matter is printed, either upon one or both sides of the sheet. Specific types of cards, such as menu or greeting cards, are divided into a number of panels, usually along the centre, by a fold line which acts as a hinge.
The Invention
The invention provides a printed matter card assembly comprising a printed front sheet of card that is bonded to a printed rear sheet consisting of a surface layer coated on the underside with a pressure sensitive adhesive and a backing layer coated on the side which contacts the surface layer with an adhesive release, and at least one shape die cut into the surface layer of the rear sheet to form a self adhesive label for sticking onto the front sheet.
In one embodiment of the invention the front sheet has a detachable interior section in the form of a postcard, and the self adhesive labels are stuck onto the face of the postcard.
In a second embodiment of the invention the front sheet of card consists of a number of panels divided by fold lines, and the rear sheet is bonded onto the back of one of the panels. The self adhesive labels are stuck onto the face panel of the front sheet.
The pressure sensitive adhesive of the labels preferably enables the labels to be stuck temporarily onto the face panel of the front sheet and then removed, that is, the adhesive has a release characteristic. The release characteristic of the adhesive is assisted by the face panel of the front sheet preferably having a glossy surface.
The invention also provides a method of manufacturing a printed matter card assembly comprising printing upon a front sheet of card, printing upon a rear layered sheet having a surface layer coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive and a backing layer coated on the surface contacting the surface layer with an adhesive release, die cutting shapes into the surface layer of the rear sheet to form self adhesive labels for sticking on the front sheet, and bonding the rear sheet to the front sheet.
The Drawings
Figure 1 is an exploded view of a first embodiment of a printed matter card assembly according to the invention for a postcard;
Figure 2 is a rear view of the printed matter card assembly shown in Figure; Figure 3 is a cross sectional view along the line AA of
Figure 2;and, Figure 4 is a rear view of a second embodiment of a printed matter card assembly according to the invention for a greeting card.
Best Mode
With reference to Figure 1, a printed matter card assembly indicated generally at 1 has a front sheet 2 and a rear sheet 4.
The front sheet 2 has a printed surface 5, and is divided by a perforation 8 into a border region 3 and a detachable interior section 6 which forms the face of a postcard. The underside of the detachable interior section 6 (not shown) has the printed layout of a postcard arranged with an area in which to write a message and an area in which to write an address. The interior section 6 is released for use as a postcard by breaking or cutting the perforation 8.
The rear sheet 4 has a backing layer 16. The front sheet 2 is bonded by gluing to the surface layer 16 of the rear sheet 4 at the border region 3, enabling the interior section 6 to remain freely detachable.
With reference to Figure 2, the rear sheet 4 has a surface layer 14. Shapes 10 are die cut into the backing layer 14 by die cuts 12. The surface layer 14 has a printed surface 15.
With reference to Figure 3, the front sheet 2, the surface layer 14, and backing layer 16 are shown separated from one another. In reality there would be no separation, which has been included for the sake of clarity.
The underside 19 of the surface layer 14 is coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive which bonds the surface layer 14 to the backing layer t6. The side 17 of the backing layer 16, which contacts the underside 19 of the surface layer 14, is coated with an adhesive release so as to enable the bond between the surface layer 14 and the backing layer 16 to be released by peeling. Each of the shapes 10 can be individually peeled from the backing layer 16 so as to form a self adhesive label which can be stuck at a desired location on the printed surface 5 of the detachable interior section 6. The detachable interior section is also coated with an adhesive release so that the shapes 10 can be removed and resited or replaced.
The legends appearing in the shapes 10 are used
cartoon-style' to create the impression of conversation between the characters depicted on the printed surface 5 of the interior section 6, that is the face of the postcard.
With reference to Figure 4, a greeting card indicated generally at 18 is divided by a fold line 20 into a pair of equal size panels 21 and 23. Parts like those described with reference to Figures 1 to 3 have been given the same reference numeral. The front sheet 2 is the rear panel 21 of the greeting card 18. The rear sheet 4 is bonded to the front sheet 2. The rear sheet 4 has a detachable interior section 22 which is released from the rear sheet 4 by breaking the perforation 24. The shapes 10 are peeled from the detachable interior section 22 and stuck onto the surface of the face panel 23, which is hidden from view in
Figure 4.
Claims (9)
