Abstract
A furniture assembly comprises panels 1, 2 secured together by means of a jointing block, the jointing block being formed of two interengaging half portions 3, 4, each half portion carrying deformable plastics dowels 5. The dowels 5 of half portion 4 are separable by removing screws 6 to facilitate removal of a panel from the furniture assembly. <IMAGE>
Description
FURNITURE ASSEMBLY
This invention relates to a furniture assembly of the kind wherein panels are secured together by jointing members. This invention relates particularly but not exclusively to kitchen, bedroom or other units which may be supplied in flat pack form for assembly on site or fully assembled at the factory. Flat pack furniture is commonly referred to as a knock-down assembly.
In conventional knock-down assemblies the jointing members have two sets of deformable plastic pegs adapted to be received in dowel-like bores in the respective panels.
Such arrangements are easy to assemble but suffer from the disadvantage that the jointing members cannot be easily disengaged from the panels for repair or replacement of the latter without removal of the whole unit from the kitchen.
Repair to damaged panels is often impossible, making replacement a necessity. Clearly it is disadvantageous to remove and then dismantle an entire unit to replace a single panel. Side panels are particularly prone to damage especially when the door hinges are attached to them.
Base panels are also prone to damage due to leaking plumbing causing damage. Replacement of side panels of abutting units can be difficult and time consuming.
According to the present invention a furniture assembly comprises a plurality of panels secured together by means of a jointing block, the jointing block including first and second portions adapted to be secured together and first and second deformable plastics projections extending from the first and second portions respectively and adapted to be received in bores in respective furniture panels, characterised in that the or each said first projection is detachable from the first portion to facilitate removal of a panel from the assembly.
The jointing block usually includes two of each of the first and second projections. The first and second projections usually extend perpendicularly from the jointing block. Disengagement of the first projections allows separation of the respective panel from the latter without withdrawal of the projections from their respective bores. A side panel of a unit, for example a kitchen unit may be withdrawn from an assembled unit without any need for disturbing an adjacent abutting unit.
Repair or replacement of the panel is thus facilitated.
The invention is further described by means of example but not in any limitative sense with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 shows and exploded view of an assembly in accordance with this invention. First and second furniture panels 1, 2 are disposed in perpendicular relation and are secured by means of a jointing block as described below.
Jointing block is formed in two half portions, the male portion 3 and female portion 4 adapted to be secured together by means of a screw 8 passing through a common bore. The female portion 4 carries two deformable plastics projections 5 adapted to be received in respective cylindrical bores 7 of the panel 1. The block portion 3 carries two similar deformable plastics projections (not shown) which extend perpendicular to the projections 5 through bores in the panel 2. The projections carried by the bore 3 are integral with the latter but the projections 5 are secured to the half portion 4 by means of screws 6 extending generally axially of the projections 5.
In use of the jointing block the half portion 3 is secured to the panel 2 by engagement of the projections within the bores in the panel. The portion 4 is secured to the panel by engagement within the bores 7 of the two portions 3, 4 and attached to the latter using screws 6.
Panels 1 and 2 are joined together by engagement of make and female jointing blocks 2 and 4 and secured together using screw 8. To remove the panel 1 and/or 2 for repair or replacement the screws 6 may be removed to allow the panel to slide edgewise without need for disturbing adjacent panels.
In alternative embodiments of the invention the jointing block is formed from two dissimilarly sized portions which interlock in the assembled product. Male and female portions may interlock, for example by means of ball and socket formations or snap fittings.
Claims (7)
1. A furniture assembly comprising a plurality of panels secured together by means of a jointing block, the jointing block including first and second portions adapted top be secured together and first and second deformable plastics projections extending from the first and second portions respectively and adapted to be received in bores in respective furniture panels, characterised in that the or each said first projection is detachable from the first portion to facilitate removal of a panel from the assembly.
2. A furniture assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein the jointing block comprises male and female portions adapted to be secured together by means of a screw passing through a common bore.
3. A furniture assembly as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein each first projection is secured to the first portion by means of screws.
4. A furniture assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein the jointing block comprises first and second portions adapted to interlock.
5. A jointing block adapted for use in a furniture assembly in accordance with any preceding claims.
6. A jointing block substantially as herein before described.
7. A furniture assembly substantially as herein before described.
