Abstract
The steering-gear housing comprises a cylinder (1) connected at one end in one piece to a valve housing (10). The cylinder is formed from an extruded profile (1) in which two hydraulic channels (4) are additionally formed, part of the extruded profile 1 being removed at the end facing the valve housing (10) substantially down to a section (8) carrying the hydraulic channels (4). This reduced section is then bent in a direction parallel to the axis of the housing bore (9) of the valve housing (10), and the valve housing is then cast around it as far as the neighbouring cylindrical tubular region (2) of the extruded profile (1). Subsequently connection holes (7, 12) are drilled between the hydraulic channels and the housing bore (9) and the inside of the tubular region (2) respectively. <IMAGE>
Description
Steering-pear housing
The invention concerns a steering-gear housing having a cylinder portion connected to a valve housing portion.
The manufacture of steering-gear housings for motor vehicles in one piece from a die-cast part is known. However, the methods usually entail high processing costs and problems of wear, as well as porosity problems. Moreover, the fitting of the associated hydraulic lines is time-consuming, expensive and requires a great deal of space.
It is desirable to provide a steering-gear housing as aforesaid which only requires simple and therefore low-cost processing operations, which is resistant to wear, and which does not require the costly fitting of hydraulic lines.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a steering-gear housing, comprising a cylinder and a valve housing connected to one end of the cylinder and at an angle to its axis, in which the cylinder is formed from an extruded profile comprising a tubular part with two hydraulic channels additionally formed along its length, the extruded profile being reduced at the valve housing end substantially down to the part carrying the hydraulic channels, this reduced end section being bent in a direction parallel to the axis of the bore of the valve housing, and in which the valve housing is formed in one piece with the cylinder by being cast round it as far as the non-reduced tubular region of the extruded profile, connection holes being formed between the valve housing bore and the tubular region on the one hand and the hydraulic channels on the other hand.
A method according to the invention includes the steps of extruding the cylinder profile so as to form a tubular region with two hydraulic channels additionally formed along rts length; substantially removing the tubular region at one end of the cylinder so as to leave the part containing the hydraulic channels; bending the said hydraulic channel part to a desired angle with the tubular axis; casting the valve housing onto the cylinder and the channel part; and forming connection holes between the valve housing bore and the tubular region on the one hand and the hydraulic channels on the other hand.
In embodiments of the invention, the cylinder is thus formed by an extruded profile, the inside of which, due to the surface quality of extruded products and the absence of drawing-out coning, requires only a little finishing, or processing by tumbling or flexible honing. The associated valve housing is cast on, the reduced section of the extruded profile containing the two hydraulic channels, being cast in. The placing of hydraulic lines is therefore no longer necessary, these being integrated in a space-saving manner in the extruded profile, so that it is necessary only to provide appropriate connection holes to the cylinder and to the housing bore in the valve housing. Before the casting takes place the cast-in section with the hydraulic channels is bent so as to follow the eventual direction of the axis of the housing bore of the valve housing, and sealed so as to prevent filling of the channels.
An embodiment of the invention will now be explained in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a steering-gear housing in longitudinal section, and
Figures 2 and 3 show sections along the lines
II - II and III - III of the steering-gear housing in
Figure 1.
The steering-gear housing shown comprises a cylinder part consisting of a section of an extruded profile 1, made for instance of an Al alloy, including a cylindrical tubular region 2, for forming the cylinder proper, and two hydraulic channels 4 formed in a single longitudinal rib 3 of the extruded profile 1 and arranged adjacent to each other. One end of the extruded profile 1 is machined down to provide a circumferential groove 5 and an inner contour 6, and to remove a section of the longitudinal rib 3. After this processing, two connection holes 7 are provided between the inside of the tubular region 2 and each hydraulic channel 4.After this, the extruded profile 1 is reduced at its other end over part of its length down to a section 8 comprising substantially only the two hydraulic channels 4, by removing the cylindrical tubular region 2, after which the section 8 is bent substantially in a direction parallel to the axis of a housing bore 9 of a valve housing 10. A rack guide element 11 which possesses an external diameter identical to the internal diameter of the tubular region 2 and can be automatically machined, is hydraulically pressed into the tubular region 2.
Alternatively it could be cast in.
The valve housing 10, also for example consisting of an Al alloy, is connected in one piece to the extruded profile 1 by casting round the section 8 and an adjacent part of the tubular region 2. For this purpose, the hydraulic channels 4 must be sealed at the valve housing end before this casting takes place (they are, of course, also sealed at the other end).
Connection holes 12 are then drilled from the housing bore 9 of the valve housing 10 to the two hydraulic channels 4.
The internal processing of the cylinder formed by the tubular region 2 can be limited in certain cases to rolling (tumbling) or flexible honing.
The rack guide element 11 forms sealing edges 14; one of these is formed by the wall of a machined recess 13 and the other by the front end facing the cast-in part of the valve housing 10.
An attachment flange 15 can be cast around a partial region of the extruded profile 1.
The hydraulic and ventilation ducts 4 could also be formed in separate longitudinal ribs, in which case two sections 8 must be cut out and bent to the required angle.
