Abstract

224,065. Coignard, A. J. Oct. 13, 1923. Chromium, depositing; supporting electrodes; coloured surfaces, producing. - In depositing chromium from an alkaline, acid, or neutral electrolyte containing chloride or other salt of chromium, or from a bichromate, chromic acid or like compound, anodes consisting of ferrochromium or a chromium ore or compound supported on perforated or network baskets or trays of a conductive material which is not soluble in the bath, such as lead, are employed. The concentration of the electrolyte may be from 10 to 50 per cent. Two per cent of hydrochloric, sulphuric or other acid may be added when electrolysing at 80‹ C., a smaller acidulation sufficing at a lower temperature. The bath may be cooled or heated by an internal or external coil. At low temperatures the deposit is of a dull blue colour and at high temperatures white.
