Abstract

A continuously variable hydraulic transmission is provided in which drive is transmitted from an input drive prop-shaft (10) to an output drive shaft (11) via bevel gearing 18 and a fluid coupling (13, 14) interconnecting the two shafts (10, 11). The fluid coupling includes a pump (13) and motor (14) circuit having an adjustable flow restrictor (17). The transmission includes control apparatus (19) which detects the angular lag of the output shaft (11) compared with the input shaft (10) caused by loading of the output shaft (11) and adjusts the flow restrictor (17) accordingly to vary the transmission ratio of the fluid coupling (13, 14) depending upon the difference in torque between the shafts (10) and (11). The motor (14) (Fig 2) has bladed forward and reverse motors and the apparatus (19) comprises three concentric helical springs <IMAGE>
