Description
BLIND RIVET NUT
The present invention relates to a blind rivet nut including a tensioning body made of resilient material to be inserted in an opening for being connected thereto and a metallic threaded element secured in the tensioning body.
Flexible blind rivet nuts of the type above referred to are known in the art. While screwing a bolt into the threaded element the section of the rubber body located between the back face of the mounting bore and the threaded element is deformed and radially expanded to a bead which comes into contact with the back face of the mounting bore. In this way a mounting is obtained in which the members to be secured together are mechanically decoupled since the mounting provides for a dampening of oscillations due to the flexible material of the rubber body. Furthermore those blind rivet nuts can be repeatedly used. The operator must observe however that the bolt must be screwed in so far that the rubber body defines a safe and sealed set-head, whereas a screwing in too far shall be avoided since the rubber body can be excessivly deformed resulting in overstretching the material beyond its resilient limits. Moreover a well-defined tensioning torque cannot be measured as the mounting is defined to be rather soft due to the elasticity of the rubber body.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved blind rivet nut which ensures that the safety of the mounting is increased when the bolt is screwed in and that the lifetime is extended.
According to the present invention, a blind rivet nut including a tensioning body made of resilient material to be inserted in an opening for being connected thereto and a metallic threaded element secured in the tensioning body, wherein the section of the tensioning body between the threaded element and the opening is deformed into a sethead, is characterized in that a distance sleeve is provided within the tensioning body between the threaded element and the opening.
According to the invention which provides a distance sleeve in the tensioning body adjacent the threaded element, the shaping of the flexible body into the set-head is limited by the distance sleeve which is urged by the threaded element into contact with the back surface of the member to be mounted. Accordingly the length of the distance sleeve is defined such that on one hand a well defined set-head for safe fixing is defined, while on the other hand an excessive squeezing of the flexible body is prevented. When the distance sleeve contacts the back face the torque applied to the bolt substantially increases. This is a safe indication that the mounting is finished.
An embodiment of the present invention is specified with reference to the Figures which show:
Fig. 1 a section of a blind rivet nut with a bolt
inserted before mounting and
Fig. 2 a section of the blind rivet nut including the
bolt in mounted condition.
The blind rivet nut shown comprises a cylindrical tensioning body 1 made of resilient material including a flange 2 integrally formed thereon. The end of the flexible body 1 opposite the flange 2 houses a metallic threaded element 4 which has an inner thread 3. The ele-ment 4 can be vulcanized in the flexible body 1 or may be positively held or secured to it in any other way. A section 7 of the flexible body lying between the flange 2 and the end 6 of the element 4 is deformed to a set-head 8 as shown in Fig. 2 when a mounting member 10 contacting the flange 2 is secured by screwing in a bolt 11.
Between the end 6 of the element 4 and the mounting member 10 a distance sleeve 12 is provided which can be axially displaced and which length is determined such that the threaded element 4 is supported on the mounting member 10 via the distance sleeve 12 when the bolt 11 is threaded in so far that the set-head 8 is shaped to obtain a safe mounting, but not excessively defoming the rubber body in the section 7.
For dismounting there are two possibilities: After releasing the bolt 11 the tensioning body 1 may spring back into its initial shape so that the mounting member 10 including the bolt 11 and the blind rivet nut may be removed. Accordingly the blind rivet nut acts as a quick setting locking means.
On the other hand the blind rivet nut may stick to the member 14 after the bolt 11 is released and pulled out so that the member 10 such as a cover may be removed.
The length of the distance sleeve 12 depends on the thickness of the member 10 and of the member 14 with respect to the length of the section 7 to be deformed and is selected such that the flexible material is not overloaded when the rubber body is tensioned.
The outer diameter of the distance sleeve 12 preferrably has a slightly larger diameter than the inner diameter of the section 7 to secure the sleeve by friction against falling out, whereas in mounting the sleeve shall easily displace to act as a counter support between the member 10 and the threaded element 4.
In a further embodiment not shown the end of the blind rivet not opposite the side of inserting the bolt may be closed to provide protection against atmospheric contamination. As an alternative the threaded element 4 is provided with a threaded blind hole with the bottom of the element closed.
