Abstract
A sprayhead assembly for HVLP sprayguns is described comprising a fan control wheel (1), a front baffle (8) encircling a spraygun nozzle, both made of a high density plastics material such as DELRIN (R.T.M.), a roar baffle (6) engaging in a recess (5) in the fan control wheel and a seal (9) of low density plastics material, such as polyethylene being located between the baffles. Each baffle (6, 8) and the seal (9) having a plurality of holes (14) passing axially through them and being spaced radially from each other. A pin (15) passing through an aligned set of holes (14) in the baffles, seal and fan control wheel to connect with a hole (18) in and to lock them to the spraygun body (2). Rotation of the fan control wheel provides a controlled adjustment of the air flow to the spraygun nozzle. <IMAGE>
Description
A SPRAYHEAD AS8tXRLY FOR SPRAYGUNS
This invention relates to the assembly of the sprayhead for high volume low pressure (HVLP) air sprayguns.
In HVLP sprayguns of the type described in our Co- pending application No. 8914130.3, the sprayhead assembly is made mainly of metal with the disadvantage that the weight of the nozzle end of the spraygun can become tiring for the operator when used for long periods when held in the spraying position.
An aim of the present invention is to overcome this disadvantage by providing a light weight sprayhead assembly with improved dimensional accuracy and a more stabilised design.
According to the present invention there is provided a sprayhead assembly for a HVLP spraygun comprising a fan control wheel of a high density plastics material, a front baffle of a high density plastics material encircling a spraygun nozzle, a rear baffle engaging in a recess on a face of the fan control wheel and a seal of low density plastics material located between the two baffles, wherein each baffle and the seal have a plurality of holes passing axially through them, the holes being spaced radially from one another and connected such that rotation of the fan control wheel through a predetermined angle controls the airflow from the body to the air cap.
Preferably the front baffle is made of DELRIN (R.T.M.).
In a preferred construction the seal is made of polyethylene and has a central aperture with inner and outer radial beads on both faces.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary axial cross-section of a spraygun assembly, according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the front baffle shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary cross-section of the spraygun assembly taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The sprayhead assembly illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 comprises a fan control wheel 1 made of acetal plastics material sold under the Registered Trade Mark DELRIN and is mounted to rotate on the spraygun body 2. The fan control wheel has two pressure springs 3 located in an internal groove 4 to facilitate the incremental adjustment of the fan control wheel relative to the gun body. The fan control wheel which is rotatable about a nozzle mounted 7, is formed with a recess 5 in its leading face in which fits the radial flange of a rear baffle 6 made of brass, which is located in the inner diameter of fan control wheel 1.
A second front baffle 8 made of a high density plastics material such as DELRIN (R.T.M.) is axially aligned with the rear baffle 6. Interposed between the two baffles is a seal 9 mounted on the rear baffle 6 and seated in a recess 10 in the rear face of front baffle 8.
The seal is made of a low density plastics material, such as polyethylene and comprises a central aperture 11 and
Inner and outer beads 12 and 13 Radially arranged between the beads 12 and 13 are a plurality of holes 14 which are so spaced from one another to align with corresponding holes in the front and rear baffles.
A pin 15 having a knurled end 16 is located in one of the aligned holes in each of the front baffle 8, seal 9 and rear baffle 6 and passes through a cam shaped aperture 17 in the fan control wheel where it locates in a blind hole 18 in the spraygun body 2. This pin locates the baffles and seal relative to one another and fixes them in the desired arcuate position relative to the spraygun body.
The flow of high volume low pressure (HVLP) air to the spraygun nozzle can be precisely controlled and adjusted by rotating the fan control wheel 1 the internal cam surfaces of which open or close the air passage from the body to the rear baffle 6.
The light weight plastics material is chosen so that in addition to its reduced weight it can be machined to provide improved dimensional accuracy. Although the plastics material described for the fan control wheel and front baffle is DELRIN (R.T.M.) it will be understood that any other high density plastics material having similar properties to DELRIN may be used. Similarly, the seal may be made of other low density plastics material having yieldable properties.
