Type composing ; enlarging, copying, and reducing.-In the production of a character matrix band or plate 16, Fig. 6, for use in photographic composing machines, the characters 15 are produced thereon photographically, the projected image of the characters being registered on the band or plate 16 by means of at least two perforations 17 thereon. A small imprint of the desired character may be made on a sheet of paper 1, Fig. 5, and an enlarged image 4 made thereof, preferably photographically, and touched up manually. The magnified image 4 is then photographically reproduced on the matrix band or plate 16 on a smaller scale. In the reduction apparatus described, the carrier 3 of the image 4 is inserted in a holder 7, Figs. 1 and 2, illuminated by lamps 8, and the reduced image formed by a lens 21 is projected on t'o the sensitive matrix band 16, which is contained in a light-tight casing 18, and passes from a roller 9 on to a roller 10, over guide-drums 11, 12 and sprocketwheels 13, 14. The drum 12 has a handle and pointer 20 to show accurately the position of 'the band 16, and like indicating means may be provided on the sprocket-wheels 13, 14. A lever 18 enables the drums and sprocket-wheels 15 to be displaced into three or more positions in order to get more than one, row of characters 15 on the band. The carrier 7 can be adjusted on guides 22 by a threaded spindle 24 for accurate focusing. A shutter may be provided on the lens 21. The matrix band or plate may take the form of a flexible film as described in Specification 195,104, or a flexible metallic strip as described in Specification 222,940, or a paper sheet or glass plate. The perforations or projections 17 can later be used to locate accurately the band or plate 16 in the projection camera of the photographic composing-machine.
