Abstract

Fluid-pressure. - A liquid-operated brake for vehicles comprises pump gears 5, 6 surrounded by a casing 8 connected by an arm 12 to the brake rigging and located in a chamber 1 containing oil &c. The casing 8 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 4 which drives the gear 5 and the shaft is driven from a moving part of the vehicle. Normally the pump gears draw oil into the casing 8 through an aperture 9 and deliver it through an outlet 10. When, however, a cylindrical valve 11 carried from the shaft 4 by a sleeve 14 is moved by a fork 15 to restrict or close the outlet 10, pressure is developed in the casing 8, which opposes the action of the pump and thus causes the casing 8 to rock in an anticlockwise direction, Fig. 1, to apply the brakes. A safety valve 13 is provided to limit the pressure developed in the casing 8 and therefore the braking pressure. The shaft 4 may be disposed vertically and the arm 12 connected to the casing 8 then be located outside the chamber 1, whilst a second pump rotating in an opposite direction from the first may be provided to effect braking when the vehicle is moving backwards, the valves of both pumps being subject to a single control member.
