Description

ANIMAL FAECES COLLECTOR The present invention relates to a system for catching and containing animal faeces.
Animals are in general not particular about where they defecate, this is equally true for domestic pets like dogs as it is for desert camels and horses. The streets, parks and pavements of towns everywhere are littered with, especially, dog excreta. It is unsightly, unhygenic, inconvenient and in the case of canine animals can harbour dangerous diseases such as toxocara which affects humans. Additionally owners who leave their animals at home when they are out, often return to find soiled carpets, furniture and gardens.
In some countries animal faeces such as camel dung are used as a source of fuel for burning, however collecting said faeces is a long and time consuming operation.
It is an object of the present invention to provide animals with a device that can be fitted by the owner and used by animals in such a way as to avoid or minimise one or more of the above disadvantages.
The present invention provides an animal faeces collector for use by an animal which collector comprises a harness mounting a generally annular connector means defining a passage for excrement therethrough, wherein said harness is formed and arranged for releasable attachment to said animal's hind section with said passage substantially directly opposite and adjacent said animal's anal orifice, said connector being formed and arranged for releasable engagement with the mouth of an animal excreta receiving container and being provided with releasable securing means for captively retaining said container in engagement with the connector in use of the collector, such that faeces excreted by said animal whilst in the defecating position can pass through the passage in the annular connector section into the excreta receiving container and be contained therein.
In general there will be used a relatively lightweight container, e.g. a plastic bag, which can be substantially supported by the connector, and the connector will be formed with sufficient strength and dimensional stability to provide the require degree of support. Nevertheless suitable support means e.g.
netting or the like could be provided on the harness either to partially or substantially wholly support the container. In the latter case it will be appreciated there could be used a particularly lightweight form of connector.
With a collector of the invention the collection of animal faeces may be effected in a particularly simple and convenient manner, and undesirable pollution of unsuitable environments such as, play areas, substantially controlled.
Any suitable form of harness may be used in the collector of the invention. In general the harness is formed and arranged to suit the size and shape of the animal which is to use the faeces collector. Dogs, for instance come in a large variety of both sizes and shapes so it is generally preferable to provide a range of different sizes and/or configurations of harness, and/or for the harness to include one or more adjustment means e.g. belt and buckle or sliding clasp fasteners, for adjusting the size and/or shape of the harness. It will be appreciated that a well-fitted harness will help to ensure proper alignment of the passage in the annular connector with the animal's anal orifice whereby the possibility of excrement not passing through the passage into the excreta container is minimised.
For the comfort of the animal using the collector it is desirable for the harness and/or the excreta containers not to impair or restrict its movement, equally so the harness and/or the container should not be ill-fitting, too tight or be responsible for itching caused by lack of ventilation. Desirably the urination needs of the animal using the faeces collector should not be impeded by the positioning of the harness.
For convenience the means of releasable attachment of the harness is by a buckle and belt arrangement or by a hook and loop type fastener or other suitable means which facilitate the owners use of the collector whilst ensuring that the animal cannot interfere with the collector harness and/or faeces container whilst wearing the collector.
The annular connector means for the support of and the releasable engagement with the mouth of the animal excreta containers may conveniently be by any suitable means but desirably by a bayonet or collar type fitting enabling full containers to be readily removed and replaced by an empty container. The annular connector means is such as to prevent interference by the wearer of the collector.
Advantageously the harness may include an additional aperture means in proximity to the annular section passage through which the animals tail is placed, further facilitating the support of the container when in use and the accurate positioning of the annular section passage over the anal orifice.
When in use of the invention an animal such as a dog will tend to adopt a squatting position when defecating, such a position conveniently makes the use of the collector easier for the animal whereby gravity causes the container to be suspended almost directly under the anal orifice.
Different sizes of container are conveniently made available to facilitate needs of animals of different sizes, for instance with dogs a large container may be used during the day when the owner is out of the house and the dog is likely to defecate more than once, whereas on for instance a short evening walk a small container may be used as the animal is likely only to defecate once in such a relatively short period.
For convenience and hygiene the excreta receiving containers are preferably in the form of more or less readily disposable items that are easily fitted and removed.
The harness and annular connector are desirably made from materials that can be easily disinfected and cleaned such as plastics.
Further preferred features and advantages of the present invention will appear from the following detailed description given by way of example of some preferred embodiments illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a general side view of a dog wearing a faeces collector of the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional side view of a first preferred embodiment of the faeces collector in use; Fig. 3 is a general perspective view of the principal parts of a further embodiment of the invention; and Fig. 4 is a sectional side view of yet another embodiment in use.
Reference is first made to Fig. 1 which shows an animal faeces collector, generally indicated by reference number 1 being worn by a dog 2. The main part of the collector 1 is a harness 10 worn over the dog's 2 hind section 4 such that its tail 6 protrudes through a tail opening 8 in the harness 10. The harness 10 extends down past the dogs anal orifice 12 and between its rear legs 14 to its belly 16 where a belt and buckle 18 holds the harness 10 in position. Beneath the tail opening 8 is an annular connector defining an anal orifice passage 20 and to which is secured a faeces receiving container 22 best shown in Fig. 2.
The faeces receiving container 22 (Fig. 2) is connected to the anal orifice passage 20 by an elongate hollow collar 24 which engages by a snap fit with, and is supported by, an annular connector section 26 of the harness 10 surrounding the dogs 2 anal orifice 12. The collar 24 is pivotally connected at one point to the top 28 of the annular connector 26 so as to facilitate the fitting and connection of a faeces receiving container 22.
The faeces receiving container 22 is generally in the form of a biodegradable plastics bag whose open mouth end 30 is folded over the inside rim 32 of the elongate hollow collar 24 which is snap fitted together with the annular connector section 26. The container 22, once used and containing excreta 34 is removed by snapping apart the annular connector 26 and the collar 24 and pulling the container 22 backwards out of the collar 24. A clean container 22 is fitted as described above.
It will be appreciated that various other modifications may be made to the above described embodiment without departing from the scope of the present invention. Thus for example connector means such as a bayonet fitting may be used to attach the faeces receiving container 22 to the harness 10. The harness 10 itself may be modified in many ways to suit the animal using the collector 1 as could be the size of faeces container 22. Fig. 3 shows a modified form of animal faeces collector of the invention and will be described with reference to- the embodiment of Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 with like parts indicated by like reference numbers and modified parts indicated with a suffix 'a'.
A separately formed orifice panel 36 incorporating the anal orifice passage 20 is slidably connected to the harness 10 across part of an elongate opening 38 extending longitudinally of the harness 10 so that the passage 20 may be aligned with part of the elongate opening 38, in use of the device, at a position along its length corresponding to the particular dog's anal orifice 12. This enables the anal orifice passage 20 to be positioned more accurately over the dog's 2 anal orifice 12, thereby ensuring excreta 34 is captured by the faeces receiving container 22.
A further, genital, opening 40 is provided in the harness 10 below the elongate aperture 38 to allow the dog's 2 genitals (not shown) to perform their normal functions and not be restricted by the close fitting of the harness 10.
Fig. 4 shows a further preferred embodiment of a faeces collector 1 of the invention and will be described with reference to the embodiments of Figs. 1 - 3 with like parts indicated by like reference numbers and modified parts indicated with a suffix 'b'. The harness 10 is provided with an anal orifice passage mounting aperture 42 in which is mounted in push-fit engagement an elongate hollow collar 24b. The faeces receiving container 22 is connected through said collar 24b and the open mouth end portion 30 of the container 22 is folded back over an annular anal abutment flange 44 at the distal end 43 of the collar 24b. The faeces receiving container 22 is held in position by an elastic band 46 around the open mouth end portion 30 of the container 22 to clamp it around the collar 24b.In use on a dog 2 the elongate hollow collar 24b may be pushed further in or out of the mounting aperture 42 so that the annular anal abutment flange 44 may be positioned for close contact around the dog's anal orifice 12 thereby minimising the possibility of excrement not passing through the collar 24b into the container 22, the collar being held in position by its friction grip interengagement with the harness mounting aperture 42.
In this embodiment a principal part 15 of the harness 10 in which are provided the tail aperture 8 and the anal orifice passage mounting aperture 42, is in the form of a sheet of a resiliently bendable material such as reinforced (e.g. with woven fibres) rubber or a plastics material such as polyvinylchloride or a polyalkene such as polyethylene or polypropylene, and the harness 10 is further provided with straps 48 formed and arranged for flanking both sides of the dog's hind section 4 and connected between a lower rear end part 11 of the harness 10 proximal the anal orifice passage mounting aperture 42 and an upper forward part 13 of the harness proximal the belt 18 (see Fig. 1) so as to hold the principal part 15 of the harness 10 in a generally self supporting arcuate configuration which can seat closely around the animal's rear end without the need for any additional harness elements passing between the animal's hind legs. This also helps to bring the anal abutment flange 44 into close positive contact around the dog's anal orifice 12.
It will be appreciated that the straps 48 may be provided with adjustment means so that the shape of the harness may be tailored to fit a dog's hind section accurately and so bring the anal abutment flange into close contact around the dog's anal orifice 12.
