Abstract
An audible warning assembly is provided for installation in an aperture in a surface (1) such as a ceiling, wall or panel in a building. A substantially cylindrical housing (2) of metal or plastics, provided with a bezel (3) surrounding an opening (4) at a front face thereof, is recessed and secured in the aperture by means of spring clips (5). An electrically operated audible warning device (9) is accommodated in the housing (2) and secured by clips (8) to a bracket (6). The bracket (6) is secured to the housing by threaded fasteners (7). The position of the bracket (6) may be adjustable so that the warning device (9) can be accommodated to a desired depth in the housing (2). If required the resulting assembly may present an external surface which is substantially flush with the surface (1). <IMAGE>
Description
AUDIBLE WARNING ASSEMBLY
This invention relates to audible warning devices. Such devices, eg sirens and sounders, are generally electrically operated and arranged for external mounting on the surface of a wall or ceiling in premises and operable to provide a loud warning signal in event of occurrence of fire or other hazard in the premises, or entry by an intruder.
Although it is known to provide audible warning devices of relatively low profile, externally mounted devices are often undesirable from an aesthetic point of view or where requirements dictate that surfaces on which they are to be mounted should be maintained substantially free from protruding objects.
The present invention is aimed at overcoming this problem.
The present invention provides an audible warning assembly for installation at a surface, said assembly comprising a housing arranged to be recessed and secured in an aperture provided in said surface, said housing having an opening at a front face thereof and having accommodated and secured therein an audible warning device.
The housing may be provided with a bezel surrounding the opening at the front face thereof.
The housing suitably comprises a metal or plastics material. It may conveniently be secured in the aperture by clips (e.g spring clips) or threaded fasteners.
The audible warning device is conveniently of a form known per se provided with mounting and securing means on a base thereof, whereby it is secured to said housing.
The housing may conveniently be an adaptation of a housing of the type known to be used for accommodating an electric light bulb and socket for recessed mounting, eg in a ceiling of premises.
The said surface may comprise, for example, a wall, ceiling or panel in premises.
By means of the invention an audible warning assembly may be installed so that its surface may, if required, be substantially flush with the surface of a wall, ceiling or panel.
The invention is described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which represents a cross-sectional view of an audible warning assembly according to the invention.
An audible warning assembly is provided for installation in an aperture provided in a surface 1 such as a ceiling, wall or panel in a building or other premises. A substantially cylindrical housing 2, e.g of metal and suitably of a type of construction known for accommodating recessed electric light bulbs and their sockets in ceilings, is located in the aperture in the surface 1. The housing 2 is provided with a bezel 3 which surrounds an opening 4 at a front face of the housing 2, the bezel 3 being arranged to bear against the surface 1. Spring clips 5 press against the back of the surface 1 and secure the housing 2 in position in the aperture. A bracket 6, which is suitably adjustable in position, is secured by threaded fasteners 7 inside the housing 2 and is provided with clips 8.
An electrically operated audible warning device 9 of cylindrical form and well known per se is accommodated in the housing 2 and secured by the clips 8 to the bracket 6. An example of a suitable warning device 9 is one manufactured by Crystalate Electronics
Limited at its Besson division at St Joseph's Close, Hive, Sussex, under the trade name Banshee (Registered Trade Mark). The warning device 9 may be wholly or partially recessed into the housing 2 according to the position of the bracket 6. If required the resulting arrangement may present an external surface which is substantially flush with the surface 1 apart from the thickness of
