Abstract

223,766. Metcalf, H. H. Dec. 3, 1923. Packeting by wrapping-up. - Relates to apparatus, for wrapping and sealing loaves or other articles in waxed paper, and of the type in which the wrapping takes place in guideways capable of adjustment to suit loaves of different sizes. The article 36, Fig. 2, before being placed in the apparatus, is enveloped in a wrapper with the edges overlapping at the bottom of the article and the outstanding ends projecting. The operator, in grasping the article, forms the first end folds 37 and the front end folds are formed by folders 39 with adjustable fingers 40 for forming a definite crease in the top end fold. As the article is advanced. the bottom end folds are turned up by fixed folders 43 with inclined forward edges and the top folds are turned down by folders 44 with outwardly turned lower edges 45. The article then passes over a heated bottom plate 6, Fig. 1, between side heating plates 18 which seal the folds, and between spring-pressed cooling plates 20 comprising a number of steel bars 25 spaced on uprights 28. The whole of the folding and sealing members are mounted on plates 11, 12 capable of lateral adjustment by means of a hand-wheel 17 with a right-and-left-hand screw shaft 16 engaging carriages 15 supporting the plates. Each side heating plate 18 is yieldingly supported by brackets 19 carried by the plates 11, 12 respectively. The bottom heating plate 6 is secured to the frame of the apparatus and carries bottom pieces 9 hinged to it at 8. The outer ends of the plates 11, 12 are supported by slides 13 on rods 14.
