Abstract

An aircraft operating surface, eg. a runway, is coated with a radar reflective material. The material may have a reflectivity equivalent to that of a surface, such as grass or sand, surrounding the aircraft operating surface. The material may include ferrous oxide.

Description

AIRCRAFT OPERATING SURFACES The present invention relates to aircraft operating surfaces, such as runways, and to materials for surfacing such surfaces.
One aim in modern warfare is to prevent operation of enemy aircraft by damaging the ground surfaces essential for their operation. An equally important aim is to prevent damage to surfaces essential for the operation of one's own aircraft. One method of minimising damage includes the use of camouflage means to disguise aircraft operating surfaces. Unfortunately such surfaces are frequently surrounded by areas of grass, and the radar reflectivity of grass and of materials used for surfacing aircraft operating surfaces are markedly different. As aircraft operating surfaces invariably have distinctive shapes they are, therefore, easily detected by radar.
According to the present invention an aircraft operating surface is coating with a radar reflective surface.
The radar reflectivity is preferably equivalent to that of a surface, such as grass, surrounding the aircraft operating surface, According to another aspect of the present invention a material suitable for coating an aircraft operating surface has a radar reflectivity similar to that of grass, sand or other material, and friction qualities compatible with aircraft operation.
materials having suitable qualities might include, for example, materials normally used for coating aircraft operating surfaces mixed with a ferrous material such as ferrous oxide.
It will be realised that when aircraft operating surfaces are sited in areas, such as deserts, where they are not surrounded by grass the reflective characteristics of the coating should be adjtlsted accordingly.
