Abstract
A window frame member comprises a main body portion 10' formed by extrusion with a substantially constant cross-section, the main body portion including a generally rectangular hollow section 11 with an outwardly facing open channel 12 at the base thereof. An elongate plastics component 30 engages with and closes the open channel 12 and extends beyond the channel on at least one side to form with the head of the hollow section a recess 14 for accommodating a window carrying frame. The channel 12 is filled with foam 32 to secure the engagement of the plastics component 30 with the channel and provide insulation. The channel 12 is defined by wall members 22 which terminate in first and second outwardly extending flanges 24, 25 at least one 24 of which is stepped to form first and second flange parts 26, 27, and the elongate plastics component 30 has inwardly projecting complementary flanges 31 which engage with the outwardly extending flanges of the wall members. <IMAGE>
Description
WINDOW FRAME MEMBER
The present invention relates to a window frame member.
According to the invention there is provided a window frame member comprising a main body portion formed by extrusion and having a substantially constant cross-section, the main body portion including a generally rectangular hollow section with an outwardly facing open channel at the base thereof, and an elongate plastics component engaging with and closing the open channel and extending beyond the channel on at least one side to form with the head of the hollow section a recess for accommodating a window carrying frame, the channel being filled with foam to secure the engagement of the plastics component with the channel, said channel being defined by wall members which terminate in first and second outwardly extending flanges at least one of which is stepped to form first and second flange parts, and said elongate plastics component having inwardly projecting complementary flanges which engage with the outwardly extending flanges of the wall members.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of one embodiment of a window frame member according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of another embodiment of a window frame member according to the invention;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of a third embodiment of a window frame member according to the invention;
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of a fourth embodiment of a window frame member according to the invention;
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view of a fifth embodiment of a window frame member according to the invention; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of part of a window frame incorporating the window frame member of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings wherein similar numerals have been used to indicate like parts, and referring in particular to Figure 1, there is shown therein a window frame member generally indicated at 10 according to the invention. The frame member 10 comprises a main body portion 10', which is formed with a substantially constant cross-section by extrusion from a suitable material such as aluminium, and includes a generally rectangular hollow section 11 with an outwardly facing open channel 12 at the base thereof opposite the head 13. The portion 10' has a recess 14 formed on the side 15, such recess being defined by an elongate flange 16 and a wedge shaped lug 17 integrally formed with the section 11 which face each other to provide the recess 14 with a restricted opening.An integral outwardly extending rebate member 18 is also provided and has a recess 19 formed on the inner surface 20 of an inwardly extending projection 21.
The channel 12 is defined between wall members 22, 23 which terminates in first and second outwardly extending flanges 24, 25 respectively. As shown, the flange 24 is stepped to provide first and second flange parts 26, 27 and the flange 25 is generally 'U' shaped.
The 'U' shaped flange 25 further has a wedge shaped protrusion 28 facing towards the head 13 of the section 11. A plastics component 30 elongated in the direction of the channel 12 has inwardly projecting right angled flanges 31 which cooperate with the flange part 27, and the 'U' shaped flange 25 to interengage the frame member 10' and plastics component 30 thereby closing the channel 12.
The plastics component 30 and the frame member 10' are securely held together by means of a plastics foam filling 32 which is introduced into the channel 12.
When the plastics foam filling 32 expands, the plastics component 30 and the frame member 10' are secured by the flanges 31 securely interengaging with the flange part 27 and the 'U' shaped flange 25. The foam filling 32 is preferably polyurethane foam. As shown the plastics component 30 is generally hollow having three channels 35, the end 36 of the component 30 having a protrusion 37 to receive a sealing member as will be described below.
In Figure 2 there is shown an embodiment of a window frame member similar to that of Figure 1 except that the plastics component 30 is of a smaller width and comprises two channels 35.
The embodiment of Figure 3 is similar to that of Figure 2 except that the rebate member 18 is angled inwardly.
In the embodiment of Figure 4, which is a mullion/transom component, the section 11 is of a greater width and has a recess 14 formed on either side 15, the recess being defined by respective elongate flanges 16 and respective wedge shaped lugs 17 integrally formed with the section 11 which face each other to provide the recesses 14 with a restricted opening. The rebate member 18 is not required on this component. Further, the 'U' shaped flange 25 is provided in this embodiment and the flange 25' is thus stepped to provide first and second flange parts 26', 27' with the flanges 31 on the plastics component engaging with the second flange parts 27 and 27'. The other end 36' of the plastics component 30 also has a protrusion 37 for receiving a sealing member 38 as will be described below.
The embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 5 is a deep transom component which is generally similar to that shown in Figure 4 except that the recesses 14 are stepped in shape.
Referring now to Figure 6 there is shown part of a window frame structure incorporating the window frame member 10. The window frame member 10 is mounted together with a suitable base part 40 on a sill member 41. It will be appreciated that the window frame member 10 in Figure 6 is in an inverted position compared to the position shown in Figure 1. A window carrying frame 50 comprises a double glazing bead strip 51 which is formed in a generally right angled construction, having a base 52 and projecting leg 53. The base leg 52 has a projecting stepped flange 54 which is accommodated behind the elongate flange 16 of the section 11.
Further, the base leg 52 has an angularly extending flange 55 which engages behind the wedge shaped lug 17 on the section 11 to securely engage the bead strip 51 with the frame member 10. The free end 56 of the projecting leg 53 has a recess 57 defined in a flange 58 to accommodate a sealing member 59 which seals against the adjacent face 60 of a double glazing unit 61.
Similarly, a sealing strip 62 is secured to the protrusion 37 and seals against the adjacent face 63 of the double glazing unit 61.
The extended leg 24, cantilevered from the main body of the profile 10 (Figure 1) improves the structural effectiveness of the frame member as a whole.
It further provides a secure screw fixing for the window handle which is secured to the plastic inner profile 30 (Figure 2) thereby limiting deflection of the PVC profile, ensuring squareness and suitability as a main frame member.
It will be appreciated that the invention provides a simple and inexpensive construction of window frame which is readily assembled.
The foam filling provides the dual function of securing the plastics component 30 to the frame member 10' and also provides excellent heat insulation for the room side of a building. The plastics component 30 can form an aesthetic appearance for the interior of a building.
It is envisaged that the window frame members 10 will be manufactured and sold in required lengths or as a component of kit of parts for assembly into a window frame structure.
