Abstract
A yarn comprising an intimate fibre blond of meta aramid fibres, para aramid fibres, and oxidized polyacrylonitrile fibres, can be woven to produce a heat-stable non-contracting fabric with a high resistance to abrasion. For greater heat resistance, the blond can be used as a cover on a silica or silicate yarn.
Description
YARN AND FABRIC
This invention relates to fabrics and the manufacture thereof, in particular fabrics resistant to high temperature and to abrasion, and to yarns for the manufacture of such fabrics.
Fabrics resistant to high temperatures and to abrasion are needed in a number of fields of industry, for example for use in conveyor belts, filters, gland packings, and fire resistant clothing.
Various materials are used at present for the manufacture of such fabrics. One known class of materials comprises asbestos and asbestos blends.
However in view of the health risks associated with the use of asbestos, there is a need to find an effective substitute for these.
Fabrics made from meta aramid fibres, from para aramid fibres, or from oxidized polyacrylonitrile fibres, have been used singly to resist abrasion and temperatures up to 700'C, but experience has shown that the wear life of such single-fibre fabrics is inadequate.
An object of the present invention is to provide a fabric resistant to abrasion and high temperatures, which will have a performance superior to and/or will be safer than known materials used for this purpose.
According to the present invention, there is provided a yarn comprising an intimate fibre blend of meta aramid fibres, para aramid fibres, and oxidized polyacrylonitrile fibres.
It has been unexpectedly found that in such a fibre, an advantageous synergistic effect occurs, such that the performance of the fibre when subjected to abrasion and/or high temperatures is superior to that of material composed of any single one of the constituent fibre materials.
More specifically, the described fibre blend can be woven to produce a heat-stable, non-contracting fabric with a high resistance to abrasion.
The present fibre blend is particularly beneficial when woven in a "solid woven" construction, which is associated with looms required to produce conveyor belting.
Preferably, there is provided an intimate fibre blend yarn formed from staple fibre, in preference to continuous filament or core-spun yarns, although the latter can also be used within the scope of the invention.
Preferably, the yarn is formed by worsted spinning, but yarn embodying the invention can be formed by any convenient process, including cotton semi-worsted and woollen spinning systems.
A preferred blend has the following proportions: meta aramid fibre about 40% to 50% para aramid fibre about 20% to 30% oxidized polyacrylonitrile fibre about 20% to 30%.
The present material, comprising a three-way blend of the specified fibres, has exceptional resistance to abrasion and heat at temperatures of 500 C and above.
It is suitable for the manufacture of high temperature conveyors, high temperature filters, gland packings, fire resistant clothing and gloves, and so on.
For temperatures greater than 700 C, and/or constant rather than intermittent exposure to heat, then the present blend can be used advantageously to cover silicate yarns which would be stable up to 750'C, or silica yarns can be covered with the present blend to produce belts or packings suitable for temperatures up to 1000*C.
