Abstract
A structured detergent composition having a low electrolyte content comprising surfactant, a betaine and/or a derivative of a betaine.
Description
DETERGENT COMPOSITION
This invention relates to detergent compositions and particularly to detergent compositions having a low electrolyte content.
In order to suspend a solid in an aqueous based medium, the medium used must behave as a solid. Aqueous based mediums which behave in this way are referred to as being structured. Known structured aqueous based mediums of detergent compositions comprise a soluble electrolyte which causes the surfactant molecules in the detergent composition to form aggregates and thus produce a three dimensional network which inhibits sedimentation of solid particles.
Known suspending systems of detergent compositions comprise sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate, soap and/or fatty anionic or di-ethanolamide and dissolved electrolyte, the electrolyte being present in the range from 5 to 15 per cent by weight of the total composition or, more specifically, greater than 0.75 gram ions per litre of alkali metal ions.
In the majority of known detergent compositions the electrolyte has been provided by detergency builders such as sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium carbonate, alkaline silicates, nitrilo-triacetate (N.T.A.) and citrates. Examples of prior art compositions are contained in EP038101, GB2123846, GB2153839, GB1167597, GB1181607,
GB1262280, GB1303810, GB1308190, GB1418671 and
GB21533880.
With the increasing awareness of the environmental problems caused by phosphates and to a lesser degree,
N.T.A. attenuation, attention is focusing on alternative, more environmentally compatible, builders such as zeolites. However, zeolites are insoluble and therefore need to be maintained in suspension if a homogeneous composition is to be provided.
The present invention has been made from a consideration of these problems.
According to the present invention there is provided a detergent composition comprising a surfactant, a betaine and/or a derivative of a betaine and water.
Preferred betaines and/or betaine derivatives comprise any of the following either alone or in combination:- Alkyl Dimethyl Betaines,
Carboxyglycinates and Alkylamidobetaines.
Preferably the betaine and/or the betaine derivative is present in the range from 0.25% to 5% by weight of the total composition.
Preferably the surfactant is present in the range from 5 to 40% by weight of the total composition.
Electrolyte and/or builders may optionally be included. The electrolyte is preferably in the range from 0 to 0.75 gram ions per litre of alkali metal ions. The electrolyte concentration is preferably less than 5% by weight of the total composition.
The detergent composition may comprises a zeolite.
Preferred zeolites include naturally occuring or synthetic varieties either alone or in combination.
A particularly preferred zeolite is wessalith.
Preferably the composition comprises zeolite in the range from 5% to 30% by weight of the total composition.
The composition may also contain bentonite.
It has been found that by including a betaine such as alkyl derivatives of betaines for example dimethyl betaine to conventional suspending systems, formation of structured compositions can be achieved by use of much lower levels of electrolyte than has previously been achieved. By the present invention, structured compostions can be formulated which are free of electrolyte other than any electrolyte derived from the surfactants.
The structured compositons produced using betaines can also be used to suspend further insoluble ingredients such as bentonite clay. Bentonite clay provides anti harshening of fabrics during the wash.

Viscosity measurements were carried out using a Poulten & Seifer viscaneter, spindle 4.
Stability tests were carried out over a one month period.
The presence of either NIA or sodium citrate is desirable but not essential. The NIA and sodium citrate act as carriers of calcium into the zeolite lattice and their presence speeds up the rate of water softening and is beneficial when a short wash programme is used.
