Description

DEVICE FOR EFFECTING SEMI-AUTOMATIC OPENING AND CLOSING OF DOORS ARRANGED
FOR PIVOTING ABOUT A HORIZONTAL AXIS This invention relates to a hinge for effecting semi-automatic opening and closing of doors particularly but not solely for use with front doors of dishwashers articulated about a horizontal axis.
Doors of domestic electrical appliances such as dishwashers, cooker ovens and the like which are articulated about a horizontal axis are normally opened and closed by means of a handle normally provided at the top of the door opposite to the articulation about a horizontal axis between the body of the domestic electrical appliance and the body of the corresponding door so that upward closing and downward opening movements of this door about the same horizontal axis of articulation by which the door is hinged to the body of the domestic electrical appliance can be manually assisted.
A hinge designed by the inventor of the present invention is described in the Italian Patent Application 3467 A/88 of 20 May 1988 which serves for the so-called automatic opening and closing of doors, particularly the doors of cooker ovens, and comprises two plate members which can be secured to the cooker body and the door body respectively and which are connected in a hinged manner along a horizontal axis lying in the vicinity of the lower side of the door and substantially comprising a triangular support and guide member pivoted at a first vertex of the triangle on the member which can be secured to the cooker body, a flanged lever member having a cam profile pivoted at one end on the plate member which can be secured to the lid body and slidablY supported between two idler rollers disposed in the first and at a second vertex of the triangular member, and a plate supported slidably at the location of the third vertex of the triangle and articulated at one end to adjustment means carried by the plate member which can be secured to the cooker body thereby providing, when controlled, for the opening and closing of the door under and against the opposing action of a spring provided at the other end of the plate between a catch of this plate and the third vertex of the triangular member In a hinge for so-called automatic opening and closing of this type the member with the opposing action or spring always operates under load during both the opening and closing of the door. A retaining device, usually of the push button type, may be provided to hold the door in a stable closed position.
An object of the present invention is to provide a hinge suitable for the articulation about a horizontal axis of a door body with respect to the body of domestic electrical appliances such as dishwashers, cooker ovens and the like so that the opening and closing of the door takes place semi -automati call y following a region where there is a substantial balance of opposing forces.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hinge which is simple in construction, is - 3 particularly effective when used with doors of domestic electrical appliances of the above-mentioned type and is particularly inexpensive to assemble in these domestic electrical appliances.
According to the invention there is provided a device for effecting semiautomatic opening and closing of appliance doors of the kind arranged for pivoting about a horizontal axis, comprising a first member for pivotal mounting about a f i rst point thereon to a part fixed relative to the appliance, a second elongate member for pivotal mounting at or near its first end on the door offset from said horizontal axis and pivoted at or near its other end at a second point on said first member, and a third elongate member pivoted at or near one of its ends at a third point on said first member, said first, second and third points being disposed triangularly, a spring mounted betwe6n the other end of said third member and a fixed part of the appliance, and cam profiles provided at the ends of the second and third members respectively, said cam profiles intermeshing in a complementary manner so as automatically to control the balance of the force exerted by the weight of the door and the opposing force of the spring when the door is being opened or closed.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a dishwasher equipped with the hinge in question for the semi-automatic opening and closing of its door; FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of a hinge of this type for the semi- automatic opening and closing of the dishwasher door with some parts in cross-section and others removed in order to show other parts; FIGURES 3, 5, 5 and 6 are diagrammatic side views of the door in a sequence of positions; and FIGURES 7 and 8 show a detail on an enlarged scale.
Figure 1 shows a dishwasher A having baskets B which can be removed in similar manner to drawers and a door P with a hinge C of the present invention for the semi-automatic opening and closing of this door P to provide access to the baskets B so that the crockery to be washed can be loaded therein and removed therefrom.
This hinge C is formed by two rigid plate members 1 and 2 which can be secured, in a known manner as will be explained hereinbelow, to the dishwasher body A and the door body P respectively and which are connected together by a pivot pin 3 in an articulated manner about a horizontal axis lying in the vicinity of the lower edge of this door P.
For the purpose of semi-automatic opening and closing there are provided a flat triangular member 4 pivoted rotatably via a pin 5 at a first vertex of the triangle on the plate member 1 which can be secured to the dishwasher body A, a flat lever member 6 pivoted rotatably via a pivot pin 7 at one of its ends on the plate member 2 which can be secured to the door body in the vicinity of the pivot pin 3 11 and pivoted at its other end via a pivot pin 8 to the flat triangular member 4 at a second vertex thereof, a flat lever member 9 pivoted via a pivot pin 10 near one of its ends to the flat triangular member 4 (see Figures 2 to 6 in particular) at the third vertex thereof, and a return spring 11 connected by way of a spring-head member 12 by pivot pin -13 to the other end of the flat lever member 9 and to a spring-head member 14 secured to a fixed point of the dishwasher body A by a flange 15 (see Figure 2).
The ends of the flat lever member 6 and of the flat lever member 9 close to the pins 8 and 10 respectively are shaped with cam profiles intermeshing in a complementary manner so as to cause the forces exerted by the weight of the door when it is being opened and/or closed and the opposing forces of a return spring 11 (see Figure 2) to be balanced automatically.
The profile of the lever member 6 comprises first and second flanks 6a, 6b (see Figure 4) disposed parallel to each other, an oblique end portion 6c and a part-circular nose portion 6d whereas the profile of the lever member 9 comprises first and second flanks 9a, 9b which merge respectively with two part-circular portions 9c, 9d respectively, each disposed at different distances from the pivot pin 13, and a concave portion 9e merging with the portions 9c, 9d.
The plate member 1 is provided with projections 16 obtained by pressing which can be engaged in corresponding - 6 recesses in the dishwasher body A so that it can be positioned for fastening by a screw 17 to this dishwasher body A following the insertion of an upper tongue projection of the plate member 1 behind a bracket 19 provided on the dishwasher body A (see Figure 2 in particular). The plate member 1 is also provided with its edge bent over to form a stop flange la so as to retain the door P in its fully open position as will be described below with reference to Figure 5.
The plate member 2 has a C-shaped cross-section having a flange 2a, for fastening it to the door body P by screws 20 (see Figure 2). The flat triangular member 4 is preferably constructed for dynamic reasons with two members connected rigidly together so as to face one another in the form of a mirror image. As shown in Figures 7 and 8, the two spring-heads 12 and 14 are formed with spiral or engagement screw projecting members for screwing to the opposite ends of the return spring 11 making it possible in this way to achieve a high degree of adjustment of the self- balancing opposing action in respect of the weight of the door P when it is being opened or closed.
As shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5, the cam profile shaping of the intermeshing ends of the lever members 6 and 9, in addition to the automatic balancing action in respect of the forces exerted by the weight of the door when it is being opened and/or closed and the opposing forces of the recal 1 spring 11, is such as to determine the 1 i mi t of travel 1 7 for the complete closure of the door (see Figure 3) and for the opening of the door in combination with the flange stop la of the rigid member 1 secured to the dishwasher body A (see Figure 5).
In the closed position of the door (see Figure 3) the tip of the lever member 9 is in engagement with the profile of the lever member 6 at the juncture of the upper flank 6a and the nose portion 6d. As the door is opened the plate 2 is pivoted to cause the plate member 6 to pivot the triangular member 4 which in turn causes the lever member 2 to move downwards thus causing tensioning of the spring 11 as the effective downward force of the door increases.
During this movement the two lever members 6, 9 progress towards respective positions where their longitudinal axes become aligned, the nose portion 6d effecting a rolling action against the concave portion 9e until finally (see Figure 5) the oblique end portion 6c rests against the concave portion 9e of the lever member 9. In this position the weight of the door is sufficient to maintain the door in its open position against the effect of the spring 11.
On closing the door balance is maintained until towards the closed position the spring assists closure, the hinge operating in the manner of a toggle.
