Abstract

The screen comprises a side panel 1 alongside the driver's seat having a leading edge shaped to fit against the vehicle windscreen and against the vehicle instrument panel and a trailing edge for securing to a rear panel 2, 6 behind the driver's seat, the two panels being secured to the vehicle body and to each other by brackets 5 to isolate the driver from the rest of the vehicle and thus protect the driver from attack. The screen is suitable for use in private saloon cars when such vehicles are employed as cabs. <IMAGE>

Description

Vehicle Screen The present invention relates to security screen for private cab drivers.
Attacks on cab drivers using private cars (mini-cabs) have been on the increase and there is a need to provide protection against such attack.
According to the present invention, there is provided a screen for fitting to a vehicle to protect the driver from attack from within the vehicle, the screen comprising: (a) a rear panel made of transparent shock-resistant material for mounting behind the driver's seat and extending (when fitted) substantially from the floor to the ceiling of the vehicle, the rear panel having one side edge shaped to fit against the side of the vehicle, (b) a side panel made of transparent shock-resistant material for mounting at the side of the driver's seat, the panel having a leading edge shaped to fit against the vehicle windscreen and against the instrument panel of the vehicle, and a trailing edge for abutting against the rear panel, the side panel extending (when fitted) substantially from the floor to the ceiling of the vehicle, (c) means for securing the rear panel to the side panel so that the trailing edge of the side panel abuts against the rear panel, and (d) means for securing the side and rear panels to the vehicle body.
The panels may include one or more openings e.g. for transmitting sound so that the driver can talk to the passengers and/or for passing money to the driver and change to the passengers.
The rear panel is preferably made of two sections one above the other with the bottom section sloping backwards in a way conforming to the rear of the driver's seat and the top section extending (preferably substantially vertically) between the bottom section and the vehicle ceiling; this arrangement allows passengers in the rear the maximum amount of room. Alternatively, the rear panel may be made of a single sheet of material.
The panels are preferably made of a transparent polymer, e.g. Perspex, although part of each panel may be opaque.
The invention will now be described in further detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a schematic view of the front of a car with the screen of the present invention fitted, Fig. 2 shows the side and the rear panels of the screen of the present invention, Fig. 3 is a side view of the side panel of the screen on the present invention, Fig. 4 is an exploded view of the screen showing the way the panels of the screen are fitted together.
Referring initially to Fig. 1, the side panel 1 of the screen has a leading edge that is shaped to conform to the shape of the car windscreen and instrument panel; it is located on the side of the gear lever and of the hand brake lever remote from the driver to allow the driver free use of the gears and hand brake; usually the screen will be fitted along the front passenger side of the central console/transmission tunnel of the car.
The rear panel, which is made of a top and a bottom section 2 and 6, meets the side panel 1 at a common edge and the two panels are secured along this common edge by brackets 5 (see Fig. 4). The bottom corner of the bottom section 6 may be cut away to fit around the central console/transmission tunnel of the car, as shown in dashed lines in Fig. 2.
The top and bottom sections 2 and 6 of the rear panel are secured together by brackets 7 and the side and rear panels are secured to the car body by brackets 5.
The side panel may be provided with openings, e.g. holes 3, to allow the driver and passengers to communicate and a flap 4 (see Figs. 2 and 3) to allow money to be passed to and from the driver.
The screen can be fitted as follows: (1) the side panel 1 is fitted; if not already pre-shaped for the particular model of car, the leading edge of the side panel 1 will have to be shaped to conform to the shape of the windscreen and the instrument panel of the car. The side panel 1 is fitted on the front passenger's side of the central console/transmission tunnel; (2) the bottom section 6 of the rear panel, if not already pre-shaped to fit around the central console/transmission tunnel, will have to be cut to do so. Of course if the car has no console/transmission tunnel, no shaping or cutting is required; (3) the top and bottom sections of the rear panel are Joined by brackets 7; (4) the rear panel is inserted behind the driver's seat and the top section is joined to the side panel in the top corner of the screen by a bracket 5; (5) the side panel is bolted to the car floor by brackets 5; (6) the rear panel 2, 6 is joined along the common edge to the side panel 1 by brackets 5 and is bolted to the floor and door post of the car by further brackets 5.
