Description

of A UNIT COMPRISING A GALLERY SUPPORT MEMBER AND AN ATTACHMENT ME MB ER
This invention relates to a unit comprising a gallery support member and an attachment member for mining aids#, in which the gallery support member has a trough-shaped profile cross-section consisting of two opposing flanges and a baser whilst the attachment member locks positively on to the gallery support member.
In a unit known f rom practice to which the invention relates, the positive locking of the attachment member on to the gallery support member is effected by means of longitudinally extended holes or slits running in the longitudinal direction in the gallery support member, together with threaded hammerhead bolts which can be inserted into the holes of slits, turned through 900 and tightened into place with the aid of a connector of the nut type. The mining aids which can be assembled on to the attachment member includes, for examplep parts of a single-rail overhead suspension tracky hooks, brackets, rollers and the like.
ordinary gallery support members are known as regular profilesr and are standardised. The same applies to gallery support members adapted in the manner just described, for the acceptance of positively locked attachment members. The holes or slits are formed in such a manner that they will not impair the bending strengthr in the sense of lowering it to bel ow the threshold value specified in the standard. However. there can be no denying that material is removed in the vicinity of the holes or slits,. and that the surface moment of inertia is significantly lowered thereby. This can have adverse effects under loads which tend to destabilise the assembly, including buckling loads, and can impair the safety of the system. There is no guarantee against sudden loss of stability under extreme loading conditions.
The object of the invention is to modify and improve a unit of the type initially described so that an attachment can be positively locked into plate in a simple manner without necessarily entailing serious reduction in the surface moment of i ner ti a.
Accoridng to the present invention there is provided a unit comprising a gallery support member and an attachment member for mining aids, wherein the gallery support member has a trough-shaped prof ile cross-section consisting of two opposing flanges and a base, whilst the attachment member locks positively on to the gallery support member, with the far side of the trough of the prof ile base provided with a shaped locking f ormation which is free from holes and extends over at least part of the length of the gallery support memberr whilst the attachment member has at least one locking counter-formation, which can be locked into the locking formation on the far side from the trough.
In one preferred embodiment of the inventiont the locking formation is shaped whilst rolling the gallery support member. In this case,, it extends over the entire length of the gallery support member on to which the attachment member can be positively locked.
The invention arises f rom the realisation that k It positive locking between the gallery support member and the attachment member does not necessarily involve forming holes th er ei n. On the contraryt a positive locking formation can be produced by shaping, and shaping can be effected without significantly reducing the surface moment of inertia. This is outstandingly the case when, as in a preferred embodiment of the invention, the locking formation is shaped as a dovetail groove or a dovetail rib. The prof iling of the positive locking formation actually contributes further to the surface moment of inertia.
The positive locking counter-formation can be shaped in various ways. one embodiment still within the scope of the invention is characterised in that the locking counterformation is shaped as a hammerhead f ormation which can be swivelled af ter insertion in the groove and tightened into place with the aid of a connector of the nut type. However, it is equally possible to adapt the system so that the locking counter-formation has two clamping cheeks which can be tightened on to the dovetail rib.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention#, the gallery support member is developed from a regular profile in the sense initially described. In the embodiment in which the gallery support member can be slid some distance into the next member and connected thereto by clips allowing some overlapping, the invention teaches that the said next member is adapted as a regular prof ile and the gallery support member fitted with the positive locking formation is matched to the said regular profile.
1 The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings in which:Figure 1 is a cross-section through the gallery support member of a unit of the invention; Figure 2 shows the attachment member associated with the gallery support member forming the object of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a corresponding view to Figure 1 of another embodiment of the gallery support member in the unit of the invention; Figure 4 shows the attachment member associated with the object of Figure 3, in two different functional settings; Figure 5 is a corresponding cross-section to Figure 1 through the gallery support member having a positive locking formation. slid into an associated regular member; and Figure 6 is a corresponding cross-section to Figure 3 through the gallery support member having a positive locking f ormationy slid into an associated regular member.
The two basic components of theunitof theinvention, as shown in the Figuresp are firstly mine gallery support members 1 and secondly attachment members 2 for mining aids. Figures 1 and 3 show that the gallery support member 1 has a trough-shaped profile cross-section consisting of two opposing flanges 3 and a base 4. The attachment member 2 locks positively on to the gallery support member 1. Accordingly a shaped locking formation 5, is provided on the far side of the base 4 f rom the trough, which f ormation 5 is f ree f rom holes. this locking formation 5 extends over at least part of the h length of the gallery support member 1. it pr ef er ably extends over the entire length, so that it can be shaPed whilst rolling the gallery support member 1. The attachment member 2 has at least one locking counter-f ormation 69, which can be locked into the locking formation 5 on the far side from the trough. This can be ascertained by a comparative examination of Figures 1 and 2, and/or Figures 3 and 4.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2r the locking formation 5 is adapted as a dovetail groove. The locking counter-f ormation 6 is of the haitkmerhead type# to be turned through 900 in the groove and tightened into place with the aid of a connector 7 of the nut type. In the embodiment shown in Figures 3 and 4, the locking formation 5 is adapted as a dovetail rib. Correspondingly, the locking counterformation 6 has two clamping cheeks which can be tightened on to the dovetail rib.
Figures 5 and 6 are cross-sectional views of a gallery support member 1 of the type described#, having a shaped locking formation _5 which can be slid some distance into the next gallery support member 8. It could be connected thereto by clips allowing some overlapping,, with frictional dragon the prof ile flanges. The next gallery support member 8 is shown to be a standardisedr regular profile. The gallery support member 1 carrying the shaped locking formation 5 is matched to this regular profile. It is obvious that pairs of gallery support members 1 of the invention can be overlapped so as to provide some yield.
