Abstract
A folding device for use in machines for wrapping objects varying size in paper or a similar material is adapted to form a corner fold in the material bonded around the object and is automatically adjusted when the thickness of the objects to be packaged is changed. The folding device comprises upper and lower plates 6, 7 hingedly mounting folding plates 8 which resiliently bear against a central folding wedge 9. The plate 7 may be moved towards and away plate 6 by rotation of screws 3 whilst the wedge 9 is simultaneously moved a commensurate distance by a screw 4 to maintain it centrally disposed between the two plates. Automatic adjustment for book size is possible by means of a motor 1, gear train 2 pulse disc 13 and proximity switch 14 with subsequent signal processing. The pitch of screw 4 is half of that of screws 3 to ensure central wedge disposition. <IMAGE>
Description
FOLDING DEVICE FOR WMAPPING OBJECTS IN A PACKAGING MATERIAL
DESCRIPTION
The invention relates to a folding device for use in machines for automatically wrapping objects of a parallelepiped shape and a varying thickness, e.g. books, in a packaging material.
Devices for packaging objects_ of a varying size, in particular books, are known in which, after a packcriging material has been placed around the objects, a corner fold is made by rigidly disposed folding members moving towards the band.
Respective upper and lower rigidly mounted folding members are used in one prior art example. The dimensions of the folding inerbers correspond to the dimensions of the object. The folding Y,.xerpbers thus have to be changed over if the size of the object is
1 - 2 changed. This process is tine-consuming, caiuiot be automated and can only be carried out by Vattina the equipment out of operation.
The aim of the invention is to make the change-over process less timeconsuming, to enable the latter to be automated and to take place while the equipment i.s in operation, thus increasing the variability of the equipment as a whole.
Eolding It is an object of the invention is to provide. members whose size can be adapted to the size of the objects to be packaged.
According to the present iwYent-,on there is provided a folding device for wrapping objeCts comprising two parallel guide plates moveable with respect to each other by connected first positioning means, a respective folding plate hingedly attached to the front of each guide plate, the two folding plates bearing in a resilient manner against opposite sides of a folding wedge which is secured to second positioning means il 4 - 3 operable to maintain the folding wedge on a line parallel to and midway between the folding plates.
Preferably,, the positioning members are screws and the pitch of the second positioning means is half that of the first positioning means.
Conveniently, the positioning means will be driven by a common motor through a set of spur gears. Optionally, monitoring means may be provided to monitor the operation of the positioning means and provide signals suitable for automatic control.
In a preferred embodiment, there is provided a folding device for wrapping objects of a parellelepiped shape and varying size in a packaging material, which member is rigidly arranged in a packaging machine, characterised by two parallel guide plates which are connected together by screws and to the front ends of which a respective folding plate is secured by means of hinge links, further characterised in that the sides of the two folding plates which are opposite the hinge links bear in a resilient manner and at an angle - 4 against the upper side and underside of a folding wedge, which is secured to a screw which is parallel with the screws and the pitch of which is half that of the parallel screws. and that the screws are connected together by means of spur wheels.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:Figure 1 is a side view of a folding device and Figure 2 is a horizontal section on the line II-II in Figure 1.
A motor 1 is connected via a gear unit 2 to a first positioning means, comprising two screws 3 which are arranged parallel to one another, and a second positioning means, comprising screw 4, the pitch of which is half that of the screws 3. The screws 3 and the gear unit 2 are mounted in a lower guide 10, which bears a guide plate 6. A respective threaded socket is disposed above on the screws 3. A guide plate 7 is secured to the screws 3 parallel to the guide plate 6 1 - 5 by means of threaded sockets 5. A respect!-%;,e folding plate 8 is fitted to the front ends of the guide plates 6; 7 by means of hinge links. The opposite sides of the two folding plates 8 bear in a resilient manner and at an angle against the top and bottom, respectively,, of the folding wedge 9, which is connected to the screw 4 via a threaded socket 5.
The corner fold is prepared by the folding wedge 9 and the folding plates 8 in that a book, around which there is a band of paper, is guided towards the folding wedge 9. The lower guide 10 and the upper guide 11 ensure that the wrapping paper is firmly applied. Should a vertical adjustment be necessary, the guide plate 7 and the upper guide 11 are moved by the motor 1 and the gear unit 2, so that the distance between them is either increased or reduced, and the folding wedge 9 is simultaneously moved half the above distance along the screw 4.
The top plate 12 defines the maximum height. A pulse disc 13, which is secured to the screw 3, transmits the number of revolutions of the screws 3 to a proximity - 6 switch 14, and adjusting steps equal to the magnitude of the pitch height (corresponding to one revolution) of the screw 3 may be made by means of the subsequent signal processing. The combination of the motor 1, the gear unit 2, the pulse disc 13 and the proximity switch 14 with signal processing enables automatic adjustment of the guide plates 6,7 and the folding wedge 9.
The 2:1 pitch ratio of the screws ensures that the folding wedge is maintained midway between the two guide plates.
