Abstract
A coin selector (1) comprises an inlet (2) for a coin (3) to roll along a channel guide (4) past three magnetic sensors (5, 6, 7) in turn. Between the three magnetic sensors (5, 6, 7) are two position detectors (8, 9). Each position detector (8) preferably comprises an infra-red light optic sensor and detects when the coin (3) first interferes with its light beam or ceases to interfere with its light beam and hence causes an associated sensor to take a reading when the coin (3) is in a predetermined position, reducing or eliminating error due to bouncing of the coin. The sensors test the coin for its diameter, cross section and alloy. One magnetic sensor is electromagnetic with a ferromagnetic core, one is electromagnetic with an air core and the third is electromagnetic with a ferromagnetic core of disperse magnetic field. <IMAGE>
Description
a k 1 A COIN SELECTOR This invention relates to a coin selector comprising
magnetic sensors. A particular application of the invention is to a coin selector comprising magnetic sensors for selecting or validating a coin according to the diameter, cross-section and alloy.
There is a known coin selector which comprises three magnetic sensors to measure the cross-section, diameter and alloy of coins. These magnetic sensors are located in a channel where the coins pass by the sensors, each sensor taking a reading when the coin passes in front of it or through it.
When the coins pass freely along the channel, there are difficulties in ensuring that each magnetic sensor always takes a reading when a coin is in a particular position relative to that sensor, because the coin tends to bounce or jump.
This produces errors which have to be accommodated, reducing the accuracy of measurement.
The present invention provides a coin selector according to each of the claims, to which reference is 2 directed.
The invention will be described by way of example, with reference to the drawings, wherein:- FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic front elevation of a coin selector embodying the invention; and FIG. 2 is a corresponding plan view.
Referring to the drawings, the illustrated coin selector 1 comprises an inlet 2 for coins like a coin 3, which rolls along a channel defined by a guide 4, past three magnetic sensors 5, 6 and 7 successively. The first magnetic sensor 5 is electromagnetic with a ferromagnetic core, the second magnetic sensor 6 is electromagnetic with an air core and the third magnetic sensor 7 is electromagnetic with a ferromagnetic core of disperse magnetic field. Two position detectors 8 and 9 are located in close proximity to the coin sensors 5, 6 and 7. That is, position detector 8 is arranged in between sensors 5 and 6, whilst position detector 9 is arranged in between sensors 6 and 7. Each position detector 8, 9 defines a point which the coin 3 arrives at, and then departs from, in that each position detector 8, 9 comprises a point light source, emitting a very narrow beam of light, and an infra-red light optic e 3 sensor. In this particular example, position detector 8 detects when the coin 3, rolling along the channel formed by guide 4, first interferes with its light.beam, to cause magnetic sensor 5 to take a reading; position detector 9 detects when the coin 3, rolling along the channel formed by guide 4, first interferes with its light beam, to cause magnetic sensor 6 to take a reading; position detector 9 then detects when the coin 3, rolling along the channel formed by guide 4, ceases to interfere with its light beam, to cause magnetic sensor 7 to take a reading. Hence the two position detectors 8 and 9 cause magnetic sensors 5, 6 and 7 each to take a reading when the coin 3 is in a predetermined position relative to the respective magnetic sensor, reducing or eliminating error due to bouncing of the coin.
