Drilling-machines; attachments for drilling.- In a multiple-spindle drilling-machine which may be used for tapping, counterboring, countersinking &c. and of the kind wherein parallel spindles are transversely adjustable to vary their relative spacings by a single shaft which adjusts the spindles simultaneously but for progressively different distances from a fixed datum, the shaft lying adjacent the spindles and being operatively connected to them individually by gearing, the adjustment of each spindle is made independently of the adjustment of the others and the gearing serves to lock each spindle in position independently. As applied to a drilling-head, the spindles 41 are mounted in housing 36 laterally adjustable in guides on a casing 35 by means of worms 49 slidably keyed on a shaft 45 rotated by a graduated hand-wheel 46. The worms are of progressively increasing pitch on each side of the central driving-shaft 10 and mesh with wormwheels 53 surrounding the spindles and attached to pinions 56 which engage a rack 59 secured to the casing 35. A helical pinion 13, Fig. 4, on the driving-shaft 10 drives a short shaft 14 meshing with a shaft 15 which extends along the casing 16 and drives pinions 43 on the spindles, these pinions being elongated to allow the spindles to be adjusted axially by means of screwed sleeves 40. When the device is incorporated in a complete machine the shaft 15 is driven directly by a pulley mounted thereon. The casing 16 is adjustable in guides 18 in the casing 12 to move the spindles en bloc by means of a pinion 22 attached to a graduated handle 23 and engaging a rack 21 secured to the casing 16, the provision of a locking-screw 24 being optional. Adjustable stops 31, 32, Fig. 2, limit the motion in either direction. The casing 12 may be rotated about the driving-shaft 10.
