Abstract

223,354. Hayes, W. Aug. 23, 1923. Compensating for wear.-Means for adjusting the clearance of the segments of brakes of the internal expanding type, with respect to the drum comprises semi-circular seatings of conical form on the pivotal ends of the segment 1, fitting against the conical head 7 of the pivot bolt 15 and in the form shown against a nut 10 threaded on the bolt but prevented from rotation by a projection 13 disposed between the ends of the segments. The bolt 15 passes through the fixed casing or support 17 and is normally held against rotation by lock-nuts 14 upon loosening which it may be turned by the squared end 16 to adjust the spacing of the segments from the drum. The nut 10 may be replaced by a boss integral with the casing 17. The conical seatings are held up to the bolt by the usual releasing springs 4 extending between the segments.
