Abstract
A handle arrangement 12 is connected to a dish by locating the dish on top of the arrangement 12 and pulling the handles 22 and 24 apart and raising the arrangement until the sides 26 and the ends 28 of the arrangement lie beneath the flange of the dish. The handles 22 and 24 are then released and they return to the position shown under their natural flexure to connect the device to the dish such that the kinks 30 extend partially around the rolled over portion of the dish. The dish can then be raised by lifting the handles 22 and 24. Disconnection is a reversal of the attachment procedure. <IMAGE>
Description
CARRYING DEVICE.
The present Invention relates to a carrying device and to a method of attaching or detaching such a device to a dish and Is particularly, although not exclusively related to the carrying of roasting dishes with a carrying device whilst being inserted into and removed from ovens.
In known roasting dishes, the meat to be roasted
Is placed In a shallow dish which Is located in an oven.
During cooking the dish becomes extremely hot and the Julces from the meat form a pool on the bottom of the dish. When removing the dish it is necessary to grip the narrow edges of the dish by inserting the hands into the space between the sides of the oven and the ends of the dish, which space may be extremely narrow. Thus both sides of the hands have to be protected agalnst the heat.
When the dish is first removed from the oven, only the forward portion of the ends of the dish are able to be held and, as the welght Is transferred from an oven shelf to the hands, the dish tends to rock due to the relatively large welght of the meat to the weight of the dish. This can lead to spillage which is compounded If the meat slides on the dish. As the edge of the dish is extremely narrow, it Is difficult for the user to both support the dish at the edge and to try and prevent rocking of the dish about an axis extending between the supported ends.
It Is an obJect of the present invent ion to attempt to overcome at least some of the above descrlbed disadvantages.
According to one aspect of the present inventlon, a carrying device includes two spaced handles
Interconnected by a connection portion, the device being arranged to support a dish. The handles may be arranged to be detachably connected to the dish.
According to a further aspect of the present
invent ion, a carrying device Includes at least one handle arranged to be detachably connected to a dish by a connection portion arranged to extend beneath elther side of a dish. The device may Include a pair of
interconnected spaced handles.
The connection portion may be arranged to provide complete support for the dish, and the connection portion may be arranged to support a dish along at least part of
its extent.
The connection portion may Include two spaced portions arranged to extend along opposite sides of a dish which portions may be arranged to extend under opposed sides of a dish. Support for the dish may be arranged to be provided by the portions arranged to extend under opposite sides of a dish.
At least partlal support for a dish may be arranged to be provided at the ends of a dish from which the handles may extend.
At least one of the handles, and preferably both, may extend upwardly, or, alternatively or additionally,
Inwardly with respect to a dish when the device is connected to a dish.
The device may be arranged to be detachably connected to a dish, and the connection or removal of the device may be arranged to be achleved by moving one or both of the handles outwardly with respect to a dish or by causing flexure of the device.
The device may be comprised by an endless member which may be comprlsed of wire.
According to another aspect of the present
Invention, a method of attaching or detaching a carrying device to a dish comprises causing relative movement of the device to the dish such that the device approaches engagement with the dish or respectively leaves engagement with the dish from what Is normally the top flange or lifting flange of the dish or in a direction from beneath the dish. The method may further include connection or disconnection of the device to the dish by causing fiexure of the device.
The present invention also includes a dish which
Includes a carrying device as herein referred to or which has had a carrying device attached by a method as herein referred to.
The invention may be cart led Into practice in various ways, but several embodiments will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Flgure 1 Is an exploded schematic perspective vlew of a roasting dish 10 at present on the market and a handle arrangement 12, and
Figure 2 Is a cross-section through opposed sides of a dish 10 with the handle assembly mounted thereon.
As shown in the figures, the dish 10 Includes a base 14 from which upwardly and outwardly extending walls 16 extend to an outwardly extending flange 18 which terminates in a curled or rolled over portion 20. The dish Is formed from a sheet of flat metal such as aluminium.
The handle arrangement 12 comprises a pair of handles 22 and 24 which extend upwardly and towards each other. The handles are formed on an endless wire which includes opposed sides 26 connected to the handles by ends 28. Each of the ends 28 leads to a different side of a handle 22 or 24 by a kink 30.
The arrangement 12 is located on the dish by placing the dish on top of the arrangement and lifting the arrangement. The handles can be pulled apart, or the relative movement between the dish and arrangement can cause outwards flexure of the handles to allow the kinks 30 to extend partially around the rolled over portion.
The assembly of the dish and handle arrangement can then be lifted by raising the handles 22 and 24 with the dish being supported by the sides 26 and ends 28 of the handle arrangement which lie on the underside of the flange 18 between the rolled over portion and the walls 16, as shown In Figure 2. Removal of the handle arrangement is a reversal of the above described sequence.
When the assembly of the dish and handle arrangement is lifted by the handles, an extremely stable structure is provided as there Is ample room for the hands to grip the handles, even when the dish is being
Inserted I nto or removed from a confIned oven.
Furthermore, any tendency for the dish to pivot about an axis extending between the handles Is easily resisted as the ends of the dish are supported by the wire structure from elther side of the handles.
The Illustrated arrangement is intended for a larger roasting dish where the room at the sides of an oven may be extremely restricted. In an alternative arrangement suited for smaller dishes, the handles extend straight up Instead of inwardly. In a further alternative to that Illustrated, the sides and ends of the wire may be a frictlon fit with the side walls of the dish to prevent the wire arrangement from falling downwardly relative to the dish.
