Abstract
A label construction includes a paper sheet (10) and a weatherproof sheet (11) overlapping and adhesively joined together. The paper sheet has readily removable side edge portions defined by very weak lines of weakening (10f, 10g) and is shorter than the weatherproof sheet. The weatherproof sheet (11) has a self-adhesive coating so that it can be used to affix the label to a surface by folding the paper sheet along a fold line (10<d>). The paper sheet is then enclosed by the weatherproof sheet. <IMAGE>
Description
LABEL CONSTRUCTION
This invention relates to a label construction for use in labelling envelopes, parcels, packages etc.
A label construction in accordance with the invention comprises at least one sheet of paper and a sheet of a weatherproof, translucent or transparent material, said sheets overlapping one another and being adhesively secured together, said paper sheet having a fold line adjacent the overlap and the weatherproof sheet being dimensioned so that, when the paper sheet is folded at said fold line, marginal portions of the weatherproof sheet project beyond the edges of the paper sheet and being coated with a self adhesive layer covered by a peelable protective layer.
The weatherproof material may be adhesive coated overall so that it adheres on folding both to the paper sheet and a surface on which the latter is placed, or selectively coated so that it adheres to said surface only.
An example of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the label spread out flat before use,
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 in Figure 1 and
Figure 3 is a section showing the label in use.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 and 2, the label comprises a rectangular paper sheet 10 which has a row of sprocket holes 10 adjacent and parallel to one of its shorter edges lOa. At the opposite shorter edge loC, the paper sheet 10 overlaps a rectangular sheet 11 of weatherproof transparent or translucent material such as polyethylene sheet. This sheet 11 is also rectangular and is of the same width as the sheet 10. The overlapping margins of sheets 10 and 11 are adhesively secured together.
The sheet 11 has one face coated substantially overall (except at its two margins) with a self-adhesive layer 12, which is covered by a peelable protective covering 13 in known manner. The sheet 11 has a margin 11 opposite the margin thereof which is secured to the margin of the sheet 10, such margin lla having sprocket holes 11b Various perforations and lines of weakening are formed in the two sheets 10, 11. Firstly, a line of weakening 110, separates the margin 11A from the adhesive coated area of the sheet 11. The sheet 10 has two lines of weakening 10d 10e extending parallel to the margins. One of these substantially coincides with the edge of the sheet 11.
The other separates the margin of sheet 10 from the body thereof. In addition there are two lines of weakening 10f, 10 extending parallel to the longer edges of the sheet 10. These lines of weakening lOf and 109 consist of slits of considerable length separated by very short lengths of remaining paper so that these lines are very weak indeed. These two lines of weakening lie about 0.5cm from the long edges and extend from line 10e to line 10d.
The drawings show a single label but it will of course be understood that the labels may be connected together side by side in a continuous strip.
To use a label, the user enters the required information on the paper sheet, either manually, by typing or by means of a computer printer. He then removes the margins at both ends, the strips defined by the lines lOf, 109 being removed at the same time. The remaining part of sheet 10 is both narrower and shorter than the sheet 11.
He can now lay the paper sheet 10 face up on the surface 20 to which he wishes to attach the label and fold the d sheet 11 in front of it on the line 10-. He then peels off the protective covering 13 and presses the exposed adhesive down on to the label and the surrounding area of the surface 20.
In a modified construction, the pressure sensitive adhesive 12 is applied to the sheet 11 only over the Ushaped area thereof indicated by dot shading in Figure 1.
The area surrounded by this U-shaped area is both longer and wider than the remaining area of the sheet 10 after its margin and side strips have been removed. Thus, when the sheet 11 is folded in front of sheet 10 it adheres only to the surface 20 and not to the sheet 10. As a result it is possible to sever the sheet 10 along the line 10f and withdraw it.
Claims (4)
1. A label construction comprising at least one sheet of paper and a sheet of a weatherproof, translucent or transparent material, said sheets overlapping one another and being adhesively secured together, said paper sheet having a fold line adjacent the overlap and the weatherproof sheet being dimensioned so that, when the paper sheet is folded at said fold line, marginal portions of the weatherproof sheet project beyond the edges of the paper sheet and being coated with a self adhesive layer covered by a peelable protective layer.
2. A label construction as claimed in Claim 1 in which said paper sheet is of the same width as the weatherproof sheet and has removable side edge portions.
3. A label construction as claimed in Claim 2 in which said side edge portions are joined to the remainder of the paper sheet by lines of weakening consisting of elongated slits.
4. A label construction substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
