Abstract

A combined label and booklet includes a transparent front sheet and a back sheet which is coated with an adhesive 20 for attaching it to a surface. A plurality of printed intermediate sheets 12a-12d are interposed between the back and front sheets and these are attached together and to the back and front sheets by adhesive 13 to form a stub 14. The sheets 12a to 12d are separable from the stub along lines of weakening 15 and are attached together by adhesive adjacent line 15. A second line of weakening 16 is formed in each of sheet 12a to 12d. The front and back sheets are attached together to form a pocket from which the booklet formed by sheets 12a to 12d can be removed. Line of weakening 15 is weaker than line 16 so that the booklet can be separated from the stub 14, the stronger line of weakening providing a hinge for the sheets of the booklet. <IMAGE>

Description

COMBINED LABEL AND BOOKLET This invention relates to a combined label and booklet for applying to packages, such as packages of fertilizers, weedkiller and other agricultural, industrial or domestic chemicals.
It is an object of the invention to provide a combined label and booklet in a simple and convenient form which is easily and economically manufacturable.
A combined label and booklet in accordance with the invention comprises a transparent front sheet, a back sheet which is coated with an adhesive for attaching it to a surface, and a plurality of printed intermediate sheets interposed between the front and back sheets and which are attached together and to the front and back sheets along a line adjacent a marginal edge thereof to form a stub, each intermediate sheet having a first line of perforations adjacent said line of attachment and a second line of perforations spaced from said first line and stronger than said first line, said intermediate sheets being attached together along a line lying between said first and second lines of perforations, and the front and back sheets being attached together along lines perpendicular to said stub to form a pocket enclosing said intermediate sheets.
With such an arrangement a booklet can be pulled from the assembly, detachment occurring along said first line of perforations. Each second line of perforations provides a hinged connection between the intermediate sheet and the booklet spine formed by the attachment of the intermediate sheets to one another.
If desired, the intermediate sheets may be lightly connected together, for example by spaced spots of a weak adhesive, along a line adjacent the edges thereof opposite said stub.
An example of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a front elevation of one example of a combined label and instruction booklet in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a diagrammatic section on line 2-2 in Figure 1, and Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 in Figure 2.
The example of the invention shown includes front and back sheets 10 and 11 formed, for example, of polythene sheet. At least the front sheet 10 is transparent but the back sheet may be either transparent or opaque.
The back sheet 11 has a self adhesive layer 20 on its back face, and a strippable cover sheet 21 overlying this layer 20.
The front and back sheets 10 and 11 are of the same dimensions as one another. Interposed between the front and back sheets is a plurality of intermediate printed sheets 12a, 12b, 12C and 12d. The intermediate sheets are attached together by adhesive along a line 13 adjacent one edge of the each sheet and the outer intermediate sheets 12a and 12d are similarly adhesively attached to the front and back sheets.
A stub 14 is thereby provided.
Each of the intermediate sheets 12a to 12d has two spaced parallel lines 15, 16 of perforations adjacent the attachment line 13. The line 15 immediately adjacent the attachment line 13 is significantly weaker than the line 16, i.e. a smaller proportion of the material along line 15 is left unsevered than along the line 16. The intermediate sheets are also attached to one another by lines of adhesive 17 between the lines 15 and 16.
The portions of the intermediate sheets 12a to 12d lying between the line 15 and the opposite edges thereof are narrower than the front and back sheets 10 and 11 and the latter sheets are attached together by heat sealing 18 or adhesive (or otherwise) along the edges thereof which extend perpendicularly to the stub 14.
The intermediate sheets 12a to 12d are lightly attached together along a line 19 of weak glue spots adjacent the edge opposite the stub.
The above described combined label and instruction booklet can readily be assembled on a suitably equipped continuous stationery collating machine. The intermediate sheets are initially included in continuous pre-printed webs which may have marginal portions at both edges formed with sprocket holes for ensuring proper alignment of the webs. Each web forming the sheets 12b, 12C, 12d has two continuous lines of adhesive laid down on it as it is fed through the machine as well as the line of adhesive dots. The four webs are brought together and at this stage transverse strips of paper are removed to provide the required narrowing of the sheets 12a to 12d Then the top and bottom sheets (also in the form of contin-uous webs) are introduced, each being provided with an adhesive line to attach it to the sheet 12a or 12d in the stub. The top and bottom sheets are now heat sealed together in the openings left by the removal of the transverse strips. Finally the margins are removed, and the webs are cut into individual labels/ instruction booklets.
For use, the strippable cover layer 21 is removed by the chemical packer and the assembly is attached to the package using the exposed self adhesive layer 20.
The end user can remove the instruction booklet formed by the intermediate sheets 12a to 12d, by simply grasping the intermediate sheets (which may, as shown, project a little from the front and back sheets) and pulling. The booklet separates from the stub along the weak line of perforations 15. The stronger line of perforations 16 provide hingeing of the individual sheets of the book to the spine thereof formed by the adhesive attachment at line 17. The dots of adhesive on line 19 ensure that the user does not inadvertently remove only part of the instruction booklet. The pages of the instruction booklet are easily opened as the dots on line 19 provide only a weak connection.
The end user can, if he wishes, re-insert the instruction booklet in the pocket provided between the front and back sheets 10 and 11 for future reference.

Claims (4)
