Abstract

A wheel of the solid-tyred type for use to guide escalator treads or the tracks of tracked vehicles or as the ground wheels of fork-lift trucks and the like comprises one or more sockets extending from the radially outer surface of the wheel 3 towards the centre of the wheel, and a solid tyre 4 of synthetic polymeric material, which extends continuously around the outer surface of the wheel 3 and also extends into the sockets. The sockets may be annular grooves 8, 9 and may be intersected by axial bores 11. The wheel 3 may be of steel, aluminium, cast iron or phenolic resin and the tyre 4 of polyurethane or neoprene. <IMAGE>

Description

improved Tyred Wheel The present invention relates to wheels fitted with solid tyres, such as are used to guide continuous moving bands such as escalator treads or the tracks of traded vehicles, or may be the ground-engaging wheels of fork-lift trucks and similar vehicles.
Tyred wheels of the foregoing type require a secure bond between the tyre and the wheel itself. However in many situations the demands on that bond are such that the tyre becomes loosened or displaced in use.
Attempts have been made to overcome this problem by notifying that surface of the wheel which engages the tyre and/or by securing the tyre with adhesive. For example in the case of one form of wheel developed for use in escalators, the radially outer face of an aluminium wheel has been given a knurled surface and then, after the application of an adhesive coating to that surface, a polyurethane tyre has been cast or injection moulded around the wheel. However when such wheels are used, the resulting rolling peripheral load tends to break the bond between the tyre and the wheel and also the side thrust arising tends to displace the tyre sideways from the wheel. Thus breakdown of the bond still often occurs in this form of tyred wheel.
There remains a need for an improved tyred wheel which is less vulnerable to displacement of the tyre than currently available such wheels. It is an object of the present invention to provide such an improved tyred wheel.
The improved tyred wheel according to the present invention comprises a wheel having one or more sockets extending fram the radially outer surface of the wheel in a direction towards the centre of the wheel, and a solid tyre, formed of a synthetic polymeric material, extending continuously around said outer surface of the wheel and further extending into said sockets.
We have established that keying in the tyre in the aforesaid way into one or more sockets in the wheel results in a nechanical bridge being formed by which the bonding of the tyre is significantly improved and the tendency of the tyre to be displaced in use is therefore greatly reduced.
The wheel itself is made of such material and of such dimensions as are appropriate to its intended use. Thus, for example, it may be made of metal, for example of steel, aluminium or cast iron, or of a suitably strong synthetic polymeric material. Particularly preferred materials for the wheel are alumina m and phenolic resins, in particular fibre-reinforced phenolic resins.
The radially outer surface of the wheel will normally be flat in a direction parallel to the axis of the wheel but may if desired be a shallow convex or concave curved surface. The e one or more sockets extend into this outer surface in the direction of the centre of the wheel. The sockets may be isolated generally tubular sockets distribated around the periphery of the wheel but preferably take the form of one or mDre annular grooves extending around the wheel periphery. In a preferred form of the invention, two parallel such annular grooves are provided in the peripheral surface.
Additional improvement in the bonding of the tyre to the wheel may be achieved by providing additional sockets which extend in a direction parallel to the axis of the wheel, at a distance frcm the radially outer surface, and intersect the one or more sockets which extend inwardly fram that surface. Such additional sockets may conveniently extend fran one of the faces of the wheel, preferably fram one face to the opposite face through the thickness of the wheel.
Thus in a most preferred form of the present invention, a pair of parallel annular grooves in the peripheral surface of the wheel are intersected by a plurality of generally tubular sockets extending between the two faces of the wheel.
The tyre is formed of a synthetic polymeric material and extends into the one or more sockets. The material of the tyre will depend upon the intended use of the tyred wheel and is selected according to the resilience and wear-resistance required by that use. Preferably the tyre is injection moulded or more preferably cast in situ.
Typical suitable materials of which the tyre may be formed are polyurethane and neoprene. For use in escalator guide wheels, Xt is preferred to form the tyre of polyurethane, especially a material having a Shore Hardness not exceeding 93.
For ground-engaging wheels, tyres of neoprene are preferred.
The invention will now be further described with reference to the accompany drawings, which illustrate, by way of example only, one preferred form of tyred wheel according to the present invention, devised for use as an escalator guide wheel, and wherein: Fig. 1 is an elevation of the tyred wheel fram one side; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view along the line II-II of Fig. 1.
The illustrated tyred wheel comprises the wheel itself, designated by the reference numeral 3, and a tyre 4. The wheel 3 is formed in a phenolic resin reinforced with cotton and in use is mounted upon a pair of ball bearings 5, 6, retained in the hub of the wheel by a circlip 7. Two parallel annular grooves 8, 9 are formed in the cylindrical peripheral surface 10 of the wheel 3 and these grooves are intersected by twelve (in the illustrated embodSment) tubular bores 11, which run through the wheel fram one face to the opposite face, in a direction parallel to the axis of the wheel.
The tyre 4 is of a polyurethane having a Shore Hardness of approximately 93 and is cast in Situ upon the periphery of the wheel. The tyre extends into the annular grooves 8, 9 and into the bores 11 and thereby becomes well bonded to the wheel. These inward extensions of the tyre give an excellent resistance to displacement of the tyre by either peripheral rolling forces or forces directed across the thickness of the tyre.
In one alternative form of the illustrated escalator guide wheel, the wheel 3 itself is made of aluminium.
