Abstract

The clip is fixable to a wall or other surface prior to insertion of a cable in the clip; clip 1 has a base portion having hole 2 for receiving a fixing pin 3 or screw and a pair of resilient arms 6 based to retain the cable 5; end portions of the arms 6 have ribs 8 engageable with a facia 7 or with a complementary clip 41. A tool for use in conjunction with strips of clips has a guillotine blade 28 and a ram 27 - the ram 28 urges the pin 3 and also actuates blade 28 to sever a jointing tab (9, Figure 2) between adjacent clips. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: Cable Clip and Tool DESCRIPTION This invention relates to a cable clip and a tool for use therewith.
A commonly used type of cable clip, for securing a cable in a desired position on a wall or other surface, comprises a rigid body having a concave face fitting transversely to the cable to cover and engage the cable. The clip has an arm or shoulder provided with a hole for receiving a fixing pin when securing the clip to the surface at a point adjacent to the cable. Locating and securing such known clips is an awkward operation and there is the hazard that the pin may penetrate the cable if accurate location is not achieved.
The clip to be described herein is designed to be fixed to a surface prior to insertion of a cable within the clip and in its preferred form readily enables a facia or a complementary clip to be incorporated. A tool to be described herein allows rapid and accurate fixing of a succession of such clips.
According to the present invention there is provided a cable clip comprising a base portion having an aperture for receiving fixing means and a pair of resilient arms biased to retain a cable inserted in the clip, the arms of the said clip being generally Sshaped, with a concave curve of each arm providing engagement with a cable and the outer end of each arm providing a lip for engagement with a facia or with a complementary clip.
The aperture of the clip is preferably countersunk to receive the head of the fixing means.
The clip is conveniently made of plastics material and may be moulded in the form of a strip comprising a plurality of clips connected by jointing tabs or by other means allowing severance of individual clips in turn from the strip. This is especially advantageous for use in conjunction with the tool to be described hereinafter.
A facia may conveniently be secured in position in engagement with the outer ends of the arms of the clip, for example by push fit. Alternatively, instead of securing a facia to the clip which is directly fixed to the surface (the "first clip"), a complementary clip may be inserted to surmount the first clip and to house a second cable. Such a complementary clip is formed with a base portion engageable with the arms of the first clip and having, like the first clip, resilient arms biased to engage and retain a cable inserted therein, engageable either with a facia or with a further complementary clip. Thus a stack of clips may be built up to house any desired number of cables, with each cable housed within its own clip.
The fixing means may be, for example, a screw, but is most conveniently a pin, the shank of which is preferably spiralled as an aid to fixing.
The clips of the present invention are most advantageously used in conjunction with a tool which allows rapid and accurate fixing of a succession of the clips to the desired surface.
Thus according to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a tool for fixing cable clips to a surface, comprising means for receiving a plurality of clips and presenting the said clips in succession to the action of a ram for driving a fixing pin into the surface. Preferably, the succession of clips is in the form of a strip (for example a strip of the clip described herein) and the clips are presented not only to a ram but also to the action of a blade for severing a clip so presented from the succeeding clip.
The ram may be hand operated or may be operated electrically.
The invention will now be illusrated, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure l(a) is a sectional view showing a clip affixed to a surface with a cable housed therein, Figure l(b) is a plan view of a clip without a fixing pin, Figure l(c) is section on the line A-A of Figure l(b), Figure 2(a) is a plan view of a strip of interconnected clips, each with its fixing pin, Figure 2(b) is a side elevation of the strip shown in Figure 2(a), Figure 3 is an elevation, partly in cross-section, of a fixing tool loaded with a strip of clips, each with its fixing pin, Figure 4 is an end view of the tool shown in Figure 3, in the direction indicated by the arrow B in Figure 3, Figure 5 is a partially sectional view along the line X-X of Figure 3, Figure 6 is an end view of the tool shown in Figure 3, from the opposite end from that of Figure 4, Figure 7 is a view similar to that of Figure 1 (a), showing a first clip and a complementary clip in position, In Figure l(a), l(b) and l(c) a clip 1 of plastics material has a base portion with a central hole 2 receiving the fixing pin 3 which is to be driven into the surface 4. The hole 2 of this clip is countersunk to receive the head of pin 3. A cable 5 is housed within the clip, being engaged and retained therein by the resilient arms 6. A facia strip 7 engages the end portions of the arms 6 by means of the ribs 8.
In Figures 2a and 2b,fourteen clips 1 are joined together into a strip by means of jointing tabs 9.
In Figures 3,4 and 5 the body of the fixing tool has a handle 21 and bottom plate 22. A strip of clips 1 is carried by the slide plate 23 which is inserted between the bottom plate 22 and slide plate guide 24.
The slide plate 23 is urged towards the operative end of the tool by means of a cable 25 kept taut by a spring-loaded drum 26. Each clip in turn is presented to the action of a ram 27 and guillotine blade 28. The ram 27 has an outer casing 29 and is provided with a return spring 30.
Accurate location of each clip in turn is ensured by the adjuster nut 32, the position of which is controlled by a spring-loaded lock 33 in conjunction with a lock stop 31. This arrangement (shown in more detail in Figure 6) allows the tool to be used with a range of sizes of clip. A guillotine guide 34, urged by spring 35, locates in the gap between each pair of clips to ensure that the jointing tabs 9 are presented to the action of the guillotine blade 28 upon operation of the ram 27.
A lug 36 serves to remove unwanted clips from a surface and to assist in the insertion of a cable.
An assembly incorporating a complementary clip is shown in Figure 7. A first fixing clip 1, housing a cable 5, is fixed to the surface 4 in the same way as shown in Figure 1. Instead of a facia, however, the clip 1 is surmounted by a complementary clip 41, engaging the arms 6 of clip 1 by means of lugs 42. The arms 43 of clip 41 are formed in a similar manner to those of the first clip 1 and may be used to engage either a facia (not shown) or a further complementary clip (not shown).
In operation, a strip comprising a plurality of clips 1 is fed into the tool by means of the slide plate 23, the position of the adjuster 32 having been set by lock 33 to suit the size of clip employed. Each clip 1 has located therein its associated fixing pin 3 with the head of the pin ready for presentation to the ram 27.
The tool is positioned on the surface to which the cable is to be fixed and the first clip is presented to the surface in the desired position. The ram 27 is then actuated, urging the pin 3 through its aperture into the surface to secure the clip thereto.
Operation of the ram 27 also actuates the guillotine blade 28, which severs the jointing tab 9 thereby separating the first clip from the remaining clips of the strip. The next clip of the strip is automatically presented ready for a similar operation.
