Abstract
Structural bearing members e.g. purlins have angles between adjacent flat webs and additional features e.g. bulges or depressions pressed into these angles at right angles to the planes of the webs, in order to increase structural stiffness of the members concerned.
Description
Improvements in or relating to structural members
This invention relates to load-bearing structural members such as beams or purlins, for buildings.
Structural members which act as load-bearing components for sheet-clad buildings are known. These are usually in the form of beams or purlins and are normally of Z-shaped, W-shaped or channel shaped section. They are usually made of rolled steel, galvanised or ungalvanized, coated or painted.
However the angles of such members, under load, tend to act as hinges and to flex under the applied load.
We have now discovered however that if an additional feature is pressed into the angles of such components their structural rigidity can be improved apprec ably.
Thus this invention consists of a structural member for a building, which has load-bearing web areas separated by angles, wherein angles between adjacent web areas have additional features pressed into them at right angles to the plane of the web to increase their structural stiffness.
Preferably the additional feature is a bulge or depression which extends inwardly with respect to the angle which it modifies.
Preferably the structural member is a purlin or side rail.
Preferably the structural member is of general z-shaped or
W-shaped section or channel section with uniform or non-uniform configuration.
Preferably the features are pressed into the member during a roll-forming process.
The invention will now be further described by reference to the 5 accompanying Figures of diagrammatic drawing which show by way of
Example embodiments of the invention.
Figure 1 a Z-shaped purlin modified according to the invention.
Figure 2 a W-shaped purlin modified according to the invention.
Figure 3 is a detail of one of the angles of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail of an angle of a z-shaped purlin which has been modified according to the invention.
and Figure 5 is a perspective view of a W-section purlin modified according to the invention.
With reference to Figure 1, a generally Z-section purlin has main web areas 1, 2 and 3 with connecting angles 4 and 5 as shown.
According to the present invention each of angles 4 and 5 is modified by the presence of inwardly directed bulges or depressions 4a and 5a in the metal web.
With reference to Figure 2, a generally W-section purlin has main web areas 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 with connecting angles 6, 7, 8, 9. In accordance with the invention each of these angles is modified by the presence of inwardly directed bulges or depressions 6a, 7a, 8a and 9a in the metal web.
Figure 3 shows a detail of angle 9 of Figure 2 and Figure 4 shows the shape of the bulge pressed into angle 9.
Figure 4 shows a detail of an angle of a Z-shaped purlin with feature 4a pressed into the angle 4.
Figure 5 shows a W-shaped purlin as shown in Figure 2 which has been modified by pressed-in features 6a, 7a, 8a and 9a, the other parts being numbered as for Figure 2.
The material from which the structural member is constructed will normally be cold-rolled steel. The bulges or other features will normally be pressed in during a roll-forming process and therefore no additional metal is involved in the modification to the angles according to the invention. Also the inwardly-directed bulges or depressions may be continuous or intermittent across the width of the member.
