Abstract

A combined flow restrictor and tap assembly for pressure-dispensed beverages comprises a tap body 3 having a preferably externally arranged flow restrictor housing 5, a flow restricting plug within the housing and integral with the tap body, and an axially adjustable flow restricting member 13 located in the housing and of complementary shape to the plug member 9. An external axially rotatable collar 27 is provided on the flow restrictor body and has a pair of long pitched helical tracks formed in its inner surface. Lugs 15 provided on the flow restricting member 13 are guided in slots 19 formed in a flow restrictor body attached to the flow restricting housing. The ends of the lugs 15 engage the helical tracks such that rotation of the collar 27 causes axial adjustment of the member 13, full range adjustment being achieved for a part rotation only of the collar. <IMAGE>

Description

FLOW RESTRICTOR This invention relates to flow restrictors for pressure dispensed beverages and it particularly relates to a combined flow restrictor and tap assembly for counter mounting.
GB PS 2117094 A (British Syphon Industries) describes known flow restrictors to generally include a frusto-conical plug member adjustably located in a frusto-conical passage so that the flow of beverage along the gradually widening annular space surrounding the plug member has restricted the flow of beverage and provided the required reduction in the beverage being dispensed.
Adjustment of the plug member is typically by way of a cap having a threaded engagement with the restrictor body and acting on the axially free plug member; some 2ss-3 turns may be required for the full range adjustment of the restrictor and this is cumbersome and time-consuming for bar staff to operate.
When combined with counter-mounted dispense taps, such as described in GB PS 1120533 (Hansen Manufacturing Company) the resulting combined assembly extends for a considerable distance away from the counter and, in certain tap designs such as that of GB 2117094 A referred to above, adjustment of the flow restrictor results in considerable movement of the tap relative to the counter.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a combined flow restrictor and tap assembly for pressuredispensed beverages wherein the flow restrictor is easier to operate and the whole assembly is more robust.
According to the present invention, a combined flow restrictor and tap assembly for pressure-dispensed beverages comprises: a tap body having a flow restrictor housing; a flow-restricting plug within the housing and integral with the tap body; an axially-adjustable, flow-restricting member located in the housing and of complementary shape to the plug member; and, adjustment means rotatable about the housing, the adjustment means and flow-restricting member being provided with co-operating parts by which rotation of the adjustment means causes axial adjustment of the flow-restricting member.
By this means a rigid, short overall length flowrestrictor can be produced. As opposed to conventional flow-restrictors, the plug remains stationary and it is the complementary flow-restricting member that is axially movable within the housing. There is thus no overall change in restrictor length, as occurs with some existing flowrestrictors.
Preferably, the plug is of a conventional frusto-conical shape.
In an embodiment of the invention, the means to axially adjust the flow-restricting member is an external, axially rotatable collar having an internal camming surface to cooperate with a cam follower on the flow-restricting member.
The camming surface may be a long-pitched helical track in the inner surface of the collar co-operating with a radial lug upstanding from the flow-restricting member; whereby full range adjustment of the restrictor may be achieved for a part-rotation only of the collar.
The above and other features of the present invention are illustrated by way of example in the drawing which is a section of a combined flow-restrictor and tap.
As shown, a dispense tap 1, in the example is the dispense tap previously described in our GB PS 2168129 A.
The tap body 3 has an integral external flow-restrictor housing 5 extending up-stream of the tap inlet 7. A frustoconically shaped plug member 9 is screwed into the housing 5 and has flow passages 11 communicating with the dispense tap inlet 7. Typically the tap body and plug member 9 are mouldings of plastics material.
An axially adjustable flow-restricting member 13 has an internal frusto-conical shape complementary to that of the plug 9 and has a pair of radially outwardly extending lugs 15.
A flow-restrictor body 17 has slots 19, to accommodate the lugs 15, and is screwed at one end into the flow-restrictor housing 5. A stainless steel cylindrical support sleeve 21 is located between opposed axial cylindrical surfaces of the complementary flow-restricting member 13 and the flowrestrictor body 17. A sealing O-ring 23 is provided between the flow-restricting member 13 and the stainless steel sleeve 21. The upstream end of the flow-restricting member 13 is also provided with a groove for a further O-ring 25 to seal within an enlarged cylindrical part of the flow duct passing axially through the flow-restrictor body 17. The flowrestricting member 13 and flow-restrictor body 17 are also conveniently mouldings of plastics material.
An axially-rotatable collar 27 is trapped between radial shoulders in the outer surfaces of the flow-restrictor housing 5 and flow-restrictor body 17 and has a pair of helical tracks (not shown) of long pitch within the inner surface of the generally cylindrical collar. The tracks co-operate with the ends of the lugs 15 and the slots 19 whereby rotation of the collar will exert a camming action between the track and the lugs to move the flow restricting member 13 axially within the rigidly connected flow resistor housing 5 and body 17. A cy kndrical plastics sleeve 29 locates the lugs 15 of flowrestricting member 13 within the collar 27, the end of the sleeve 29 adjacent the lugs 15 forming an edge of the helical tracks. Shims 31 provide axial manufacturing tolerance adjustment of the absolute position between complementary member 13 and plug 9.
The upstream end of flow-restrictr body 17 has a conventional John Guest connector to the usual bar or counter fittings.
In use rotation of the collar 27 through a part, 120 degree, turn provides full axial adjustment of the flowrestricting member 13 with respect to the plug 9. One extreme of adjustment seals the plug with respect to the flow-restricting member and the range of adjustment is sufficient to allow for the range of beverages to be dispensed and the range of dispense pressures.
