Abstract

417,620. Nozzle valves. MORRIS, J., MORRIS, JUN., J., and MORRIS & SONS, Ltd., J., Salford Fire Engine Works, Cross Lane, Salford, Lancashire. May 13, 1933, No. 13929. [Classes 69 (iii) and 135.] In a jet control and shut-off nozzle for use with branch pipes, hoses &c. particularly for fire-brigade &c. use, a stream-lined valve is concentric with its seating to provide an uninterrupted flow of fluid, relative motion between the valve and seat being produced by rotation of an external sleeve acting through a screw thread. Closure or adjustment of the jet does not alter the overall size of the nozzle. In one form, the double conical valve b is secured in a coupling union c by a spider c<2> and the seat a<1> is formed as a sleeve a slidable within the nozzle d. A short sleeve e is secured to the sleeve a by pins e<2> passing through slots d<1> in the nozzle and is provided with an outer square or other screw thread coacting with a rotatable sleeve nut f. The nut f rotates between a shoulder on the nozzle and a screwed ring g secured thereto by a set screw g<1>, and prevents access of grit &c. to the working parts. Access of water to the working parts is prevented by a screwed packing ring dx. In a modification the screw thread on the nut f and sleeve e is a two-start thread of considerable pitch so that the full range of adjustment is obtained with less than a complete revolution of the nut and a spring pin on the ring g co-operates with recesses in the upper edge of the nut to locate the nut definitely in different angular positions which are indicated by graduations on the nozzle. In a further modification, the valve seat A<1>, Fig. 23, is formed in the nozzle A and the valve b is attached by a spider to a sleeve B<1> connected by pins E<2> to the short screwed sleeve E which is movable axially by the outer rotary nut F. In each construction graduations may be provided to indicate the setting of the valve.
