Description
COMBINED OUTBOARD MOTOR AND RUDDER UNIT
This invention relates to a combined outboard motor and rudder unit for use on waterborne craft, such as a sailing yacht.
According to the present invention there is provided a combined outboard motor and rudder unit for use on waterborne craft, comprising a rudder blade provided at its upper end with a power unit, said blade housing at its bottom end a propeller shaft connected to a propeller blade and a drive transmission from the power unit to the propellor shaft and means being provided for mounting the unit for pivoting movement about a vertical or substantially vertical axis.
The rudder blade may be provided with water inlet and exhaust conduits connected to a motor constituting the power unit.
The unit may also be provided with means for enabling the unit to be tilted about a horizontal axis.
Preferably the upper end of the unit is provided with a tiller.
The power unit preferably comprises an internal combustion engine and the rudder blade may include fuel storage means.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the single figure is a diagrammatic side view of a combined outboard motor and rudder unit embodying the present invention.
The unit comprises a rudder blade 10 which in use is mounted at the stem of a waterborne vessel 11 by mountings 12 which enable the rudder blade 10 to pivot about a vertical or substantially vertical axis, a power unit 13 mounted on the upper end of the rudder blade 10 and a propeller shaft 14 which extends from the rear edge of the rudder blade 10 and on which is mounted a propeller 15.
A suitable drive transmission extends from the power unit 13 to the propeller shaft 14, said drive transmission consisting of shafts and gears or pulleys or sprockets and belts or chains located within the rudder blade 10.
The rudder blade 10 may include fuel storage means and can include water inlet and exhaust conduits connected to the power unit 13.
The blade 10 may be mounted for pivoting movement relative to the vessel 11 about a horizontal axis.
The power unit 13 may be readily detachable from the rudder blade 10 or it may be permanently fixed thereto. The rudder blade 10 is caused to pivot about the mountings 12 by a tiller 16.
The power unit 13 preferably comprises an internal combustion engine.
The combined outboard motor and rudder unit preferably provides auxiliary propulsion for a sailing vessel. It does not incurr the drag of a conventional outboard motor when the vessel is under sail propulsion. The propeller 15 may be of the self folding type in which the blades fold together when not rotated in order to reduce drag.
The blade 10 is preferably formed of fibre reinforced plastics material but it may be formed of metal.
