Abstract

223,107. Forrester, H. J. C., (Stickle, S. E.). Jan. 28, 1924. Stays.-Relates to beds or chairs having sections which can swing about horizontal axes and are operated by gearing to support the swing- able sections in any one of a number of angular positions. According to the invention, the moving section carries an arcuate rack 24 which passes through and engages a central threaded hole in a worm wheel 26. The worm wheel is mounted on a stud 22 projecting from a baseplate 9, both stud and base-plate having a guide plate 23 for the rack-bar as shown in Fig. 3. A worm 15, mounted in bearings 12 on the baseplate is turned by a crank handle 19, or by a cord 33 passing over a pulley 17 fixed to the worm shaft 13, and actuates the moving section by means of the toothed rack-bar. A base-plate with gearing as described may be secured at each side of the fixed members of the bed or chair frame, the worm shaft being continuous and interconnecting the gears. As described with reference to a chair the rack-bar is pivotally mounted on the moving foot-rest 51 and has a sliding connection 53, 54 with the chair back 55, which moves with the foot-rest.
