Abstract
A display panel is formed from a lamination of a transparent glass sheet (1) and a backing sheet (11) on which the graphics are printed or otherwise affixed. The sheets are adhered together by a film (7) of transparent liquid which is applied first to the glass sheet (1), before the backing sheet (11) is firmed down onto it by rollers (14). Immediately after this stage, the liquid is cured by being exposed to ultraviolet light (15) through the glass sheet (1). <IMAGE>
Description
"Improvements relating to Graphic Display Panels"
This invention relates to graphic display panels, and in particular to a panel constructed from a translucent sheet, such as clear glass, with the graphic material on the rear or normally inaccessible side clearly visible through the glass.
Printing directly onto the glass, particularly with many colours is complicated and expensive. It has been suggested that a printed backing sheet should be adhered to the rear side of the glass, but there are problems with such panels, such as ensuring that the backing sheet is smooth and wrinkle free, and that the adhesive does not contain any air bubbles or other imperfections which can distort the visible image. It is the aim of this invention to provide a technique which should largely answer this problem.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of forming a graphics display panel comprising progressing a substantially rigid translucent front sheet below means which dispense on to one side of the sheet a transparent liquid adhesive curable by ultraviolet light, synchronously progressing the coated sheet and a sheet with graphics thereon through a roller nip to compress the sheets together, the sheets being interfaced by the adhesive, and exposing the adhesive to ultraviolet light through the translucent front sheet.
The squeezing action of the rollers should remove all air bubbles and produce an even "sandwich". The curing by ultraviolet light is used since most other types of curing are impossible. If the adhesive was solvent based, there would be nowhere for the solvents to go once the two sheets were squeezed together, and so the adhesive would remain uncured. Likewise, if the adhesive was one that cured by oxidising, no air could get at it to promote that effect.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a graphics display panel comprising a substantially rigid translucent front sheet, a backing sheet carrying graphics which are visible through the front sheet, and a transparent adhesive set from a liquid by ultraviolet light curing and filling the gap between the two sheets.
The front sheet will usually be transparent smooth glass, while the backing sheet could be plastics material, such as vinyl. The graphics will generally be on the side to face the glass, but with translucent plastics they could be on the other side. The adhesive will preferably have a similar refractive index to that of the front sheet.
For a better understanding of the invention, one emobodiment will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the single figure is a diagrammatic side view of apparatus for constructing a laminated panel.
A glass sheet 1 is progressed from right to left in a horizontal plane, being supported and moved by rollers 2 and later by a conveyor belt 3. At the transition, and above the path of the sheet 1, there is a pair of rollers 4 and 5 extending transversely to the direction of motion and spaced horizontally to create a narrow slit with a V-shaped trough above. The width of the slit and the height of the rollers 4 and 5 above the path of the glass sheet may be adjustable.
The trough is kept substantially filled with a viscous liquid 6 and the rollers counter rotate in the arrow-marked directions so that the liquid is carried through the slit adhering to the roller surfaces. The thickness of this temporary coating, at least on the downstream roller 5, will be slightly greater than the gap between that roller and the upper face of the glass sheet 1. Therefore, at that gap the liquid comes into contact with the sheet 1 and largely transfers to it to produce a coating 7 smoothed by the rollers 5. Any trapped air bubbles should then be expelled.
If the sheet is not present, some liquid may part from the rollers 4 and 5 and fall between the support rollers 2 and the conveyor belt 3 into a collecting trough 8. It may then be re-circulated. When cured, as described below, it forms an adhesive.
Above this assembly there is a flat support surface 9 sloping down towards the delivery end of the belt 3. At the lower end of the surface 9 there is a roller pair 10 with a nip by which a sheet 11 on the surface 9 can be gripped and progressed through on to a conveyor belt 12 which carries the slope on down to that delivery end of the belt 3. The rollers 10 and belt 12 are driven and they are triggered into action by a sensor 13 at the upstream end of the conveyor belt 3 responsive to the arrival of the leading edge of the glass sheet 1, and also to the departure of its trailing edge.
Downstream of the belts 3 and 12 there is another roller pair 14 into whose adjustable nip are synchronously delivered both the coated glass sheet 1 and the sheet 11.
The rollers 14 press these together, smoothing out the sheet 11 and expelling any air bubbles that may still remain in the adhesive coating 7.
Downstream of these rollers 4 the laminated panel passes over an ultraviolet light source 15, which cures the adhesive coating 7, acting through the glass sheet 1, and this completes the lamination.
