Description

PACKS FOR ARTICLES AND METHOD OF PRODUCING SAME The present invention relates to a pack for articles and to a method of producing such a pack.
In the present specification the term 'pack' is intended to cover any type of container or means for attachment to an article such as a flat card or folded card etc which is used to package an article for the point of sale.
Such packs are commonly stored at the point of sale on shelves or suspended from rails. The present invention is particularly concerned with packs intended to be suspended from rails and relates, in general, to a pack provided with a suspension member to enable the pack to be suspended from a rail.
It will be appreciated that packs for articles are made in a wide variety of forms and are made from a wide variety of materials such as card or plastics in sheet or film form which can be coated with different types of coverings, such as printing inks, lacquers etc.
It is known to provide packs with a suspension hook but in general such hooks are attached to the package at a suitable location by a mechanical connection such as a spigot on the hook passing through an aperture formed in the material of the pack. Such a connection can readily cause the material of the pack to tear if it is pulled whilst suspended by the hook. Thus at the point of sale packs may become damaged by customers and once damaged in this way it is not possible to re-suspend the pack by its hook. This is one disadvantage which the present invention aims to avoid.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a pack for articles including a body formed from stiff sheet material adapted to contain or be attached to said articles, and a suspension attached to said body, the suspension member including a planar base portion from which extends a suspension portion, the planar base portion being bonded in face to face contact with a surface of said body by a hot melt adhesive.
Preferably the suspension member is constructed from a suitable plastics material, such as polypropylene and is conveniently produced by an injection moulding process.
The suspension portion is preferably defined by a hook portion. In one form, the base portion and hook portion are co-planar such that when secured to the pack, the hook portion resides in a plane parallel to the plane of the surface of the body to which it is attached. This is very convenient from the point of view of packing empty packs together for storage and transportation. Preferably the hook portion and base portion are flexibly connected such that when the base portion is secured to the pack, the hook portion is able to flex relative to the base portion thereby reducing strain between the base portion and the body of the pack.
Advantageously the hook portion and base portion are hingedly connected and are arranged such that the hook portion extends generally perpendicularly from the base portion. Such a suspension member is particularly suited for attachment to a wall of a pack, such as the top wall of a container so that the hook portion extends generally perpendicularly to said wall.
Advantageously the hook portion is shaped and formed from a flexible plastics material such that a downward pull on a pack suspended by the hook portion causes the hook portion to deform and uncurl from the supporting rail in preference to separation of the base portion from the body of the pack.
Advantageously, the surface of the base portion in contact with the hot melt adhesive is provided with keying formations for assisting bonding of the adhesive to the base portion.
Preferably the hot melt adhesive is capable of bonding to various surface finish coatings associated with carton board such as ultraviolet varnishes, printing inks and china clay board coatings, etc. Preferably the hot melt adhesive contains one or more of the following a polyolefin such as polybutene, a block-copolymer formed from aromatic and aliphatic monomers such as a styrene-isoprene block copolymer and a hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin. The relative proportions are chosen to suit the character of the surface to be bonded. The adhesive preferably contains an antioxidant such as a hindered phenol anti-oxidant.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a process for producing a package for articles, the process including bonding a suspension member to a surface of a pack using an adhesive such as a hot melt adhesive.
The process preferably comprises feeding successive suspension members and pack blanks to a suspension member applying location whereat a suspension member is applied to a pack blank, adhesive having been applied to the suspension member and/or pack blank prior to application of the suspension member to the pack blank. Preferably the suspension member includes a base portion for bonding to the pack, the glue being applied to said base portion prior to application of the suspension member to the pack.
The invention is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a pack according to the present invention shown suspended from a rail; Figure 2 is a schematic view similar to Figure 1 of another pack according to the present invention; Figure 3 is a schematic perspective view of a hook member, of the type shown in Figure 1, prior to application; Figure 4 is a schematic perspective view of a modified hook member, of the type shown in Figure 1, prior to application.
Figures 5 and 6 are schematic perspective views of alternative hook members of the type shown in Figure 2 prior to application.
Figure 7 is a schematic perspective view of a collection of packs of the type illustrated in Figure 2.
The pack 10 illustrated in Figure 1 is shown suspended from a rail 15 and includes a pack in the form of a strip of stiff material such as card which has been folded to overlap opposite sides of an article to be packaged thereby. The pack includes front and rear leafs 16 which in use are attached to the articles, such as socks 12, which are to be suspended.
The pack includes a raised central portion 16a and a suspension member in the form of a hook member 25 of the type illustrated in Figure 3, is attached to the raised central portion 16a. The hook member 25 includes a hook portion 26 and a base portion 27 which is attached to the raised central portion 16a by bonding using a hot melt adhesive. The hook member 25 is positioned such that the hook portion 26 projects beyond the upper periphery of the pack to enable the hook portion 26 to be suspended from rail 15.
As illustrated in Figure 1, the hook member 25 is bonded to the outer surface of central portion 16a. Since the outer surface of the card from which the pack is formed is normally finished with a surface coating such as printing ink, varnish, china clay etc. a hot melt adhesive capable of bonding on such surfaces is used. Preferably the hot melt adhesive used is that supplied by Swift Adhesives Ltd under reference B948/64 as indicated hereinbefore. The hook member 25 may be bonded to an inner surface of the pack. In such a case the surface to which the hook member is bonded will probably not be coated with a finish. Accordingly a different hot melt adhesive may be used. Bonding to an inner surface not having a finish can produce a stronger bond and is better aesthetically.
Preferably as illustrated in Figure 3 the hook member 25 is formed in one piece from a suitable plastics material and is a generally planar shape. The base portion 27 preferably has a surface 28 which is provided with keying formations to improve bonding of the hot melt to surface 28.
The keying formations may comprise recesses and/or projections or may comprise a roughened surface.
The hook member 25 illustrated in Figure 3 is suitable for attachment to a wall of the pack wherein the hook portion 26 is intended to extend in a plane which is parallel to the plane of the wall.
Preferably as illustrated in Figure 4 the base portion 27 is made of a reduced thickness compared to the hook portion 26 and thereby is rendered relatively more flexible and also provides a flexible connection between the hook portion and the base portion. This is a desirable feature as twisting or pulling forces directed generally laterally from the plane of the wall to which the base portion is bonded are accommodated by the flexible connection and thereby helps reduce strain on the bond.
An alternative pack 100 is illustrated in Figure 2 wherein a pack 101 is suspended from rail 15 by a hook member 125 of the type illustrated in Figure 5 or 6. The pack 101 is in the form of a container having a top wall 111. A hook member 125 is attached to the top wall 111 by bonding using a hot melt adhesive. In use, the hook portion 126 of the hook member 125 extends generally perpendicularly to the plane of wall 111. The hook member 125 is preferably in line with the centre of gravity of the pack such that the pack assumes a vertical orientation when suspended from the rail.
The hook member 125 includes a base portion 127 which is bonded to the top wall 111 by hot melt adhesive.
As shown in Figure 2 the hook member 125 is bonded to the outer surface of top wall 111. In such a case the above mentioned hot melt adhesive B948/64 is used. A hook member 125 is illustrated in Figure 5 which is suitable for bonding to the external surface of a pack. The hook member 125 is preferably moulded in one piece such that the hook portion 126 and base portion 127 are located at substantially 900 to one another. Preferably the hook portion 126 and base portion 127 are connected by a hinge connection 129 which enables the hook portion 126 to move about the hinge to assume a storage position whereat it lies in face to face contact with the upper surface of the top wall Ill. Thus when several such packages are contained within a box for transport the hook portion of each container lies flat against its upper wall and thereby facilitates storage. In a box of packages, the hook portion will be maintained in its storage position by the weight of packages above it.
The hook member 125 is formed so as to have inherent bias within the hinge connection such that when a container is removed from a box, its hook portion will rise toward its suspension position which is illustrated in Figure 2.
Preferably, the hinged connection is created by forming the base portion 127 of reduced thickness thereby making it relatively more flexible than the hook portion.
Preferably the hook member 125 is adapted to be bonded to the inner surface of wall 111. In this respect the hook member 125 as illustrated in Figure 6 may be suitable. The hook member 125 illustrated in Figure 6 has a base portion 127 of reduced thickness but also the marginal portion 126a of the hook portion adjacent the base portion is formed of a reduced thickness to thereby make it flexible. In this way the base portion 127 may be deformed into general alignment with the hook portion 126 to enable it to be inserted through an opening in the wall 111. Release of the deforming force enables the base portion 127 to recover to its perpendicular orientation and contact the underside of the wall 111.The marginal portion 126a is chosen to be of a width equal to at least the thickness of wall 111 to provide the hinge connection 129 referred to in relation to the embodiment of Figure 5.
The hook members 25 and 125 are both preferably formed in one piece from a suitable plastics material which is sufficiently flexible to enable the hook portion 26, 126 to uncurl from the rail in preference to separation of the bond between the base portion 27,127 and the pack should the pack be pulled downwardly.
Advantageously, as illustrated in Figure 7 a row of packs may be secured together to form a cartridge. The cartridges are stored in transportation boxes and when removed therefrom all the hook portions 126 of the individual packages rise to their suspension position enabling an operative, in one operation, to load all the packages of the cartridge onto a rail. A sleeve or band 130 securing the packs together to form the cartridge is then removed.
