Abstract

A mail bag with inflatable walls is formed of two rectangular sheets 1 and 2 welded together at their side edges, folded and again welded together at their side edges. The sheet 1 is longer than the sheet 2 so as to provide a closure flap 3. Each wall may comprise separately inflatable sections. <IMAGE>

Description

INFLATABLE MAIL BAG: DESCRIPTION: This invention relates to an inflatable mail bag.
At present fragile items in the mail are protected by such means as corrugated cardboard, polystyrene in preformed shapes and in small pieces, and padded mail bags. To varying extents these add to the weight of the item being mailed and also takes up considerable storage space.
An object of this invention is to obviate or mitigate the above disadvantages.
According to the invention there is provided an inflatable mail bag, each wail of which is inflatable so as to provide protection for the contents of the bag.
An example of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of an inflatable mail bag taken on line I - I of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line II - II of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, an inflatable mail bag is formed of impermeable flexible material such as strong polyvinyl chloride or rubber. The bag is formed of two rectangular sheets 1 and 2 welded together at their edges, folded and again welded together at their side edges. The sheet 1 is somewhat longer than the sheet 2 so as to provide a flap 3 for closing an open end 4 of the bag. The flap 3 and an adjacent portion of the sheet 1 have respective co-operating components 5 and 6 of a hook-and-loop fastening for retaining the flap 3 in its closing position against inadvertent opening, so as to protect the contents of the bag. A closeable inflation opening is shown at 7. The bag may carry on the sheet 1 a transparent pocket (not shown) for an address.
It will be noted that the bag will take up very little space in storage, when deflated, and will be very light for its volume, when inflated. It is envisaged to provide the bag in various sizes. In a more sophisticated version each wall of the bag may be formed of a plurality of separately inflatable sections.
