Description

STREW FCRNITCRE This invention relates to street furniture of the kind (hereinafter termed of the kind referred to) adapted to be secured to a support in the form of a post, either provided by that supporting a bus stop sign, a traffic sign or the like, or dedicated for the present purpose.
Street furniture of the kind referred to is conventionally strapped, or otherwise fastened to the side of the support post and is frequently the object of the unwanted attentions of vandals, who have been known to tear it from the post for the purposes of theft or otherwise.
It is an object of the present invention to provide street furniture of the kind referred to designed to be less susceptible to attention by vandals.
According to the present invention there is provided an item of street furniture of the kind referred to having an opening extending between its upper and lower extremities whereby it can be mounted on the support post with the post extending through the item.
The item may be a litter bin comprising a container.
The container may be a cylindrical shell closed at its upper and lower ends by plates having apertures therein to accomodate the post.
The cylindrical shell may be of circular cross section.
Each of the plates may be formed with an apertured collar adapted to surround the post and which may be clamped thereto by a key operable lock or by screws.
The screws may have vandal proof heads which require a special tool to turn them.
One or other of the upper and lower plates may be axially separable from the cylindrical shell to give access to the interior of the shell.
The upper plate may be the separable plate and have a depending skirt which forms an extension of the cylindrical shell.
The skirt may be provided with openings to permit the introduction of litter to the interior of the container.
The container may have a liner.
The liner may have handle means at the upper extremity thereof.
The liner may have a radial slot which is adapted to accommodate the post and permit lateral removal and replacement of the liner from and to engagement with the post following necessary axial movement of the container.
The liner may have a projection along the edges of the radial slot which extends upwardly beyond the upper edges of the liner to prevent ingress of litter to the confines of the slot.
The liner may be a hollow cylinder of circular cross section having a base a.nd aperture formed coaxially therein from which a tube adapted to engage the post extends upwardly.
The liner may comprise two arcuate members pivotally connected to engage the post.
The container and upper and lower plates may be of plastics material.
The liner may be of metal.
The container and end plates may be formed by a rotational moulding technique, one of the end plates being separated from the main body of the moulding by a transverse cut.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description, with reference to the several figures of the accompanying drawings, which show, by way of example only, one form of litter bin embodying the invention.
Of the drawings Figure 1 shows a side elevation of litter bin; Figure 2 shows the litter bin of Figure 1 with the upper plate raised to give access to the liner which is shown in broken lines; Figure 3 is a plan of a first form of liner showing the radial aperture therein; Figure 4 is a plan of a second form of liner; and Figure 5 is a plan of a third form of liner.
Referring firstly to Figure 1, it will be seen that the street furniture is a litter bin 11 having an opening extending between its upper and lower extremities hereby it can be mounted on the support post 12 with the post 12 extending through the litter bin 11.
The litter bin 11 comprises a container 13 which is in the form of a cylindrical shell 23 closed at its upper and lower ends by plates 14, 15 having apertures therein to accommodate the post 12.
The cylindrical shell 23 is of circular cross section.
Each of the plates 14, 15 is formed with an apertured collar 16, 17 adapted to surround the post 12 and which may be clamped thereto by a key operable lock 20 or by screws 18.
The screws 18 have "vandal proof" heads (not shown) which require a special tool to turn them.
The upper plate 14 is axially separable from the cylindrical shell 23 by loosening the screws or operating the lock 20 through collar 16 to permit emptying of the container 13 as required at intervals. The plate 14 has a depending skirt 33 which forms an extension of the cylindrical shell 23 when in its normal position.
The skirt 33 is provided with openings to permit the introduction of litter to the interior of the container 13.
The container has a liner shown generally at 21. The liner 21 has wire handles 28 at the upper extremity thereof.
The liner 21 shown in Figure 3 has a radial slot 22 which is adapted to accommodate the post 12 and permit lateral removal and replacement of the liner 21 from and to engagement with the post 12 following necessary axial movement of the container after plate 14 has been raised.
The liner 21 of Figure 3 has a projection 67 along the edges of the radial slot 22 which extends upwardly beyond the upper edges of the liner 21 to prevent ingress of litter to the confines of the slot.
Figure 4 shows a second form of liner 21 comprising a hollow cylinder of circular cross section having a base and aperture 24 formed coaxially therein from which a tube 25 adapted to engage the post 12 extends upwardly.
Figure 5 shows a third form of liner 21 comprising two arcuate members 26 pivitolly connected by a piano hinge 27 to engage the post 12.
The container 13, skirt 33 and upper and lower plates 14, 15 are made from an ultra-violet lightresistant plastic and the container and end plates are formed by a rotational moulding technique, the end plate 14 and skirt 33 being separated from the main body of the moulding by a transverse cut.
The liner is fabricated from sheet steel to minimise the risk of fire if, for example, a lighted cigarette is discarded into the bin.
Although the litter bin can be of any practical size, it preferably has a diameter of between 40 and 50cm, and a height of 80 to 100cm.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
Thus, for example, the cylindrical container may have a square cross section.
The post adapted to support the item may be plastics coated.
