Abstract

A chef's hat is proposed wherein the crown (11) comprises a facing layer (15) of net material laminated to a heat fusible interlining material (16) in pleated configuration thereon. An upturned cuff (12) is secured to the lower edge of the crown (11) to extend upwardly therefrom to lie in closely adjacent disposition relative to the lower part of the crown, whilst the hat further includes an openwork top panel (13) of such dimension widthwise of the cap as to bring the sides thereof into upwardly convergent form. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS TO HATS The invention concerns hats, and has more particular reference to chefs and like hats of the kind used in food manufacturing plant and catering establishments.
The object of the invention is to provide a hat of the kind aforesaid which is of simple construction, is pleasing in appearance and which is of a kind such as will satisfy hygiene regulations as applied to foodstuff and like manufacture and to the catering trade.
According to the present invention there is proposed a chefs or like hat characterised in that the crown thereof comprises a lamination of an interlining material and a facing layer applied thereto in pleated configuration.
According to a preferred feature, the crown is of upwardly tapered form.
According to a further preferred feature, the hat includes a top panel extending about and secured to the periphery of the crown.
According to a still further preferred feature, the facing layer is secured to the interlining material along parallel lines arranged at centres spaced apart by a distance approximately equal to twice the pleat width.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating one embodiment thereof and in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a chefs hat constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the hat shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing, a chefs hat constructed in accordance with the invention comprises a pleated crown 11, an upturned cuff 12 sewn to the lower edge of the crown, and an openwork top panel 13.
The crown 11, which crown is of generally rectangular form when viewed in side elevation and has an arcuate upper edge 14, comprises a net material 15 arranged in pleated configuration and laminated to and outwardly of a heat fusible interlining 16, the adhesion between the net material and interlining being along spaced parallel vertical lines 17 respectively corresponding to a pleat root. Each pleat comprises outer and inner portions 18, 19, the outer portion 18 having a width substantially twice that of the inner portion, such that, in appearance, the surface of the crown approximates to a multiplicity of immediately adjacent pleats 20 of constant width extending throughout the height of the crown. Other pleat configurations may be adopted.
In a preferred arrangement the net is 100% resinated nylon, although alternative fabrics, for example a lightweight 67/33% Polyester/Cotton cloth may be used if desired.
The heat fusible interlining 16 is conveniently a non-woven fabric comprising a polyester/viscose mix of a weight of 40 grams per square metre and having a polyamide dot coating applied thereto. The heat sensitive adhesive coating may take any convenient form and may comprise any conventional adhesive material.
The cuff 12 is of like net material to the crown, and exists in two-ply form about the lower edge of the crown, to extend upwardly from said edge to lie closely adjacent the lower part of the crown in overlapping disposition relative thereto.
The top panel 13. is also of net material and is of reducing width towards the front and rear edges of the hat, the panel being seamed along the line of symmetry thereof, as at 21, and being of such dimension, in the widthwise direction thereof, as to give an upward convergence to the sides of the hat as seen in front elevation.
Whilst, in the arrangement, illustrated, the top panel extends across the whole of the top of the hat, it is to be appreciated that a like convergent effect to that shown can be achieved merely by providing a tie across the top of the hat to limit the separation of the upper edges of the walls of the hat when in use.
It is to be appreciated that in the absence of any restraint across the top of the hat, such hat will effectively beparallel-sided.
We have found that a hat constructed as aforesaid is pleasing in appearance and maintains its shape in use.
Furthermore, the hat meets the exacting hygiene requirements necessarily applied to the context of foodstuff preparation and catering.
The hat may be laundered as required without any loss of form or effectiveness.
