Abstract
A moulding paste comprises a major proportion of a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) paste and a minor proportion of powdered slate. The paste is particularly suitable for the production of hollow articles with improved rigidity and insusceptibility to temperatures above normal room or shop temperatures.
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN MOULDING PASTE
This invention relates to moulding paste which may for example be used to produce articles of an ornamental nature.
A process known as rotational moulding, wherein a rotating member moves in all 'azimuths' within a heated chamber, is used to produce hollow articles.
A predetermined amount of moulding paste is injected into each individual mould and the movement of the rotating member causes the paste to flow in all directions within the mould. A skin of paste is produced on the inner surface of each mould and hence a hollow article is produced.
A known moulding paste is a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) paste, available in two grades of hardness.
However hollow mouldings produced with such paste do not tend to be sufficiently rigid and hence are unsuitable for ornamental use or the like. The mouldings also tend to soften when exposed to temperatures above the normal room or shop temperatures.
The object of this invention is to provide a moulding paste which overcomes the above disadvantages of PVC paste. This is achieved with a moulding paste in accordance with the invention which comprises a major proportion of a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) paste and a minor proportion of powdered slate. The powdered slate is finely ground, having particles of the order of 30-60 millimetres in size, preferably 50-55 millimetres.
This paste produces mouldings which are hard and, being hollow cast, enable large articles to be made which would otherwise be too heavy. The mouldings produced with the moulding paste according to the invention also exhibit improved temperature characteristics.
Also the addition of powdered slate to PVC paste eliminates the objectionable chemical odour usually associated with articles made purely from
PVC paste.
In a moulding method according to the invention the powdered slate is added to the PVC paste and thoroughly mixed, prior to being injected into a mould, positioned within a heated chamber.
It has been found that the preferred ratio, by weight, of powdered slate to paste in 2.9%. This ratio produces mouldings which do not tend to crack and also results in adequate curing of the paste.
The temperature of the heated chamber should be sufficiently thoroughly to cure the paste.
Claims (6)
1. Moulding paste comprising a major proportion of a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) paste and a minor proportion of powdered slate.
2. Moulding paste as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the ratio, by weight, of powdered slate to PVC paste is 2.9%.
3. Moulding paste as claimed in claims 1 or 2 wherein the average size of the particles of powdered slate is between 30 and 60 mm.
4. Moulding paste as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the average size of the particles of powdered slate is between 50 to 55 mm.
5. A method for producing moulding paste wherein the powdered slate is added to the PVC paste and mixed thoroughly together and then the paste is injected into moulds which are positioned within a heated chamber.
6. Moulding paste substantially as described herein.
