Abstract

A data transfer system uses a piezo-electric crystal 2 flexed by a magnet or soft iron core 1 driven by a coil 5 and thus requiring no amplifier to interface to digital logic, (not shown). <IMAGE>

Description

DESCRIPTION LOW POWER ISOLATING DATA LINK WITH DIGITAL INTERFACE This invention relates to a means of constructing a data link which gives isolation between the two halves of the link, uses little or no power and generates a signal which can be applied direct to a digital input of a logic circuit.
Inductive data links using inductive coupling are well known but suffer from the disadvantage of requiring amplifiers to boost the inherently low signal level to a suitable level to interface to digital circuitry.
According to the present invention it is possible to have an inductive coupling without any requirement for amplification before application to a digital input.
A specific embodiment will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 shows a data link comprising a piezo-crystal with attached magnet coupling to an induction coil, shown in cross section.
Referring to Figure 1 a bar magnet (1) is attached to the centre of a piezo-crystal (2) supported so that any movement of the magnet (1) causes flexing of the crystal (2). The crystal (2) has electrical contacts to its front and rear faces. For the purpose of data interchange a donor housing (3) is slid into a receptacle housing (4) so that a coil (5) surrounds the bar magnet (1). Energisation of the coil (5) by a current will cause sympathetic movement of the bar magnet (1) which will cause flexing of the crystal (2) which will generate a voltage differential across its front and rear faces. In some applications a soft iron core could be preferable to a bar magnet.
The voltage thus generated is of a high magnitude and will preferably require diode limiting before being applied to a shmitt input. An ideal logic family for the purpose would be CMOS type, which exhibits a high input impedance. Such detail will be understood to those practised in the art.
