Abstract
The electronic measuring calculator is an instrument similar to a conventional pocket calculator but which has an interfaced wheel driven pulse generating sensor unit which can be moved over a surface such as a map or plan to give a distance readout directly on a digital display or to a printer. The sensor unit can be built into the instrument or it may be demountable for ease of use, whilst still connected to and interfaced with the measuring calculator circuit. It may include an optical shutter or reflector or have a series of pulses recorded in a magnetic coating and sensed by a record/replay head. The number of pulses from the sensor unit are directly related to the distance covered by the external wheel. After a sample run over the scale of a map or plan the instrument is programmed to display any further movement of the sensor as the actual distance it represents.
Description
ELECTRONIC IBASURING CALCULATOR
This invention relates to an electronic measuring calculator.
Small electronic calculators, pocket or desktop, simple or complex are well known instruments. The user inputs data and instructions by means of a keypad and the answer is given on an electronic display. Some versions also allow a paper print out to be made.
Using a normal calculator to calculate measurements from a map or plan. for example a route between places on a map, the usual.
procedure would be to first use a ruler, dividers or other mechar.i~al aid to measure the distances on the map. Iher, by centering this information together with data from the maps scale an answer will be found.
According to the present invention there is provided an electronic measuring calculator comprising an instrument similar to a conventional calculator but which has an interfaced pulse generating sensor unit which can be moved over a surface such as a map or plan to give a distance readout directly on the electonic measuring calculator display or printer.
The sensor unit is built into the instrument but it may be deinountable for ease of use, however it is connected to and interfaced with the measuring calculator circuit.
The sensor unit in its basic form consists of an external wheel which drives an internal rotor which acts as the optical shutter or reflector for an opto-electronic switch. The opto electronicswitch and its associated amplifier and output stage are then linke to and interfaced with the calculators processing circuit that the number of switched pulses from the sensor unit may be county and either manually or automatically stored into the mern Tb sensor unit in it mDre sophisticated high resolution form cons sts of an external wheel which drives an internal rotor which has a magnetic film coating. The magnetic film coating on the rotor rubs against a magnetic recording/replay head. Recorded ont. this film are a series of pulses, which when the rotor turns are detected by the replay head and fed to an amplifier and output stage. This is then linked to and interfaced with the calculators processing circuit so that the number of switched pulses f the sensor unit may be counted and either manually or automatically stored into the memory.
It should be noted that the number of pulses from the sensor units described above are directly related to the distance covered by the external wheel if it is rotated by friction contact when the sensor unit is pushed across a surface.
h specific use of the invention will now be described by way of an example, how to find the distance between points on a map.
The sens@r is run over the maps scale markings and sends a series of pulses relative to the distance covered@ to the calculators memory. The distance the maps scale markings represent is now entered tV means of the keypad. By comparing the number of pulses I in memory ard the figure entered by the keypad, a calculation is obtained of the precise distance represented by each pulse from the sensor.
9'its, this information entered into memory, the sensor can now be rut over any part of the map in question and the display will show the actual distance this represents.
