Abstract
The distance-measuring device has a distance-measuring wheel 1 with a plurality of holes or stripes with equal space between each other for generating a signal upon rotation of the wheel; the signal generated with the wheel is picked up by a radiation sensor 6, through which the signal is coupled to an IC of the calculator. The signal is converted into a unit of distance which is displayed on a display panel. This device can be used to measure a given length instead using a conventional straight ruler or the like.Transmitted or reflected radiation may be detected by the sensor 6. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Electronic calculator with distance-measuring device
This invention relates to a distance-measuring device, particularly to an electronic calculatorthat is improved by adding with a distance-measuring device.
Generally, people usually use a rulerto measure a length; after the measuring, they count the scale on the rulertofind outthetotal units ofthe length.Aside from the slowly measuring speed, the user who has a bad sight such as presbyopia would have a hard timeto read the mm scale. Both the conventional ruler and the tape rule have their disadvantages respectively; forinstance, the length of a ruler is usually limited by having a length of 5cm, 1 Ocm, 15cm, 30cm and 45cm, etc.. A ruler longerthan 45cm would be difficult for a userto carry. Even the length of a tape is also limited.
The prime feature of the present invention is to measure a length by means of a distance-measuring wheel to rotate on a surface, of which the length isto be measured. Since the distance-measuring wheel is furnished with a means to generate a signal to show a regular distance unit. Upon the distance-measuring wheel rotating, a sensorwill pick up the signal and send itto an IC, which will convert the signal into a digit to be displayed on a display panel.
An embodiment of this invention is described by way of example with reference to the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates the first embodiment ofthe distance-measuring wheel according to the present invention.
Figure2 is a side view ofthe present invention shown in Figure 1, being operated with a straight radiating sensor.
Figure 3 illustrates the second embodiment ofthe distance-measuring wheel according to the present invention.
Figure 4 is a side view of the present invention shown in Figure 3, being operated with a reflecting type of sensor.
Figure 5 is a block diagram of the circuit ofthe present invention.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the present invention.
This invention provides an electronic calculator with distance-measuring device, in which a distance-measuring wheel is installed in the calculator.Asensorcan pickupthe distance-equivalent signal generated by the distance-measuring wheel, and then sends the signal into an IC in the calculator; the distance measured will be shown on the indicating panel.
The prime object of the present invention is to provide a distance-indicating signal generated by the distance-measuring wheel, and that signal isto be picked up with a sensor. The distance-indicating signal may stand for cm, mm or inch.
It is another object of the present invention to mount a distance-measuring wheel on the calculator to be used as a measuring rule so asto provide the calculatorwith more functions.
It is still another object of the present invention to utilize the existing circuit of the calculatorto fulfil the functions desired by modifying only a limited part of the hardware thereof.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown the first embodiment according to the present invention, which comprises a distance-measuring wheel 1, a rubber ring 2, a pluralityofdistance-indicating holes 3, and a center shaft 4. The rubber ring 2 is mounted around the outer ci rcumferential edge of the distance-measuring wheel 1 for furnishing more frictional force with the wheel 1. The distance-indicating holes 3 are furnished around the wheel edge portion; the space between two holes 3 may stand for one mm, one cm, or an inch, depending upon the measuring system used in the country.
Referring to Figure 2, there is shown a side view of the present invention shown in Figure 1, in which 5 standsfortransmitter,and6standsfora straight-radiating type of sensor. A signal is supplied from paint "a", and is passing through the holes 3 on the distance-measuring wheel 1; then, the signal is received bythesensor6. Upon the distance-measuring wheel 1 rotating, the sensor 6 will pickupthedigitalsignalofthe distance-indicating hole 3 and transmit itto point "b" ofan IC.
Referring to Figure 3, there is shown the second emobodiment of the distance-measuring wheel according to the present invention, in which the distance-measuring wheel is the same as that shown in Figure 1; 8 designates a rubber ring same asthat shown in Figure 1; 9 designates indicating stripes; 10 designates a center shaft. The major difference between the distance-indicating hole 3 in Figure 1 and the indicating stripes 9 is that the former is a through hole, while the latter are printed stripes (in black and white colors).
Referrring to Figure 4, there is shown the side view of a reflecting type of sensor according to the present invention, which comprises a transmitter 11 and a sensor 12. A signal from point "a" is transmitted into the transmitter 11, which sends a signal to the indicating stripes 9, and then the indicating stripes 9 reflect the signal to the sensor 12. Upon the distance-measuring wheel 7 rotating, the signal sent out from the transmitter 11 will be reflected by the indicating stripes 9 (the black stripes not reflecting, but the white stripes reflecting) to generate a digital signal to be picked up the sensor, from which the signal is coupled to point "b" of an IC.
Figure 5 illustrates a block diagram of the present invention, which comprises a keyboard 13, an IC 14, display panel 15, a powerswitch 16, and a battery 17.
The circuit can provide a calculatorfunction normally. In measuring distance, press down the
CE/C clear key 20 to the IC 14; in that case, the display panel 15 displays a "zero". The, press down the SC key 21 for measuring distance. When a signal from point "a" of the IC is transmitted to the transmitter upon the distance-measuring wheel 1 rotating, the sensorwill pick up a digital signal generated by the distance-indicating wheel to be coupled to point "b" on IC 14. After the signal being processed through the IC, a distance will be indicated on the display panel 15. If the distance-indicating hole or indicating stripe is designated to indicate mm, the unitshown on the display panel will be mm; if there designated to indicate inch, the unit shown on the display panel will be inch.
Figure 6 illustrates a perspective view of the present invention, in which 18 designates the outer case 18 of the calculator, and 19 designates the reference line. The aforesaid description have included the best embodiments of the present invention; however, the present invention may be changed and amended by the person or persons skilled in the art without deviating from the spiritof the present invention; in otherwords, the present invention may, if necessary, be changed and modified in itsouterform orstructurewithout deviating from the prime essentials thereof.
It is understood that the aforesaid drawings are merely used for illustrating the preferred embodiments of the present invention without limiting the scape of the present invention. Any person who is skilled in the art may make minor alterations without deviating from theform, structure, features or spirit of the present invention, butthat minor modification thereto should be deemed as being included in the claims ofthe present invention.
