Abstract

A portable measuring tape comprising an integral flashlight 1 which is arranged to provide illumination during use of the tape measure, and a manually operated spring loaded stopper 9 for stopping or inhibiting passage of the tape during a measurement. As shown, upward finger pressure on the stopper 9 lifts a jaw 10 clear of the tape. <IMAGE>

Description

PORTABLE MEASURING TAPE This invention is concerned with portable measuring tapes.
Conventional portable measuring tapes currently used in the home and outside do not usually have a stopper. Even when they do have a stopper it is not designed to be convenient for manual use Moreover if one needs to use a measuring tape at night or in a dark place it has the disadvantage that a separate light has to be provided.
This invention is for the purpose of providing a more developed measuring tape which overcomes the above problems. Accordingly the invention provides a portable measuring tape having an integral light, and a manually operated tape stopper.
An embodiment will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings: The first figure is a perspective view partdissembled of this invention.
The second and third figures are partial crosssectional views which show the principal features of this invention and indicate the operating conditions.
The fourth figure is a cross-sectional view partially cut away which indicates the tape and stopper openings.
The fifth figure is a perspective view of a light bulb cap; and The sixth figure is a perspective view which indicates the use of this invention.
The principal parts shown in the drawings are as follows:101. The Body 102. Tapeline 103. Loop 104. Clip 1. Flash light 2. Switch 3. Space 4. Prominent Jaw 5. Light bulb 6. Cap for protecting light bulb 7. Space 8. Principal groove 9. Stopper 10 Jaw 11. Protruding pin 12. Supporting fragment 13. Projecting part 14. Spring 201. Spring elasticity supporter 202. Opening 203. Supporting jaw 204. Square hole 205. Principal groove.
The portable tape measure in accordance with the invention contains a tapeline (102) and hold a loop (103) and a clip (104). A supporter (201) for a spring is formed in the centre of the interior at the front, and a square hole (204) is located at a part of the front, with a supporting jaw (203) and a downward opening (202) being made behind this square hole. A square principal groove (205) is composed on the right and left side of opering (202). A flash light casing (1) is located on the top as shown in Figure I. A switch (2) is located on the casing and a space (3) exists in the interior of the flash light casing so that a bulb (5) can be located in the space (3).
Projecting jaws (4) are located within the outlet of the flash casing (1) so that cap (6) can be assembled via principal groove (8) of cap (6). The cap is to protect the bulb and has a flared outlet space 7 to allow the light to project. The cap is assembled by revolving the cap (6) relative to the casing (1).
Jaw (10) and left and right projecting part (13) are located for vertical movement. A projecting pin (11) is arranged directly above them and after inserting an " " shaped stopper (9) inside the opening (202) of the body (101), and also inserting matching left and right projecting part (13) onto the principal groove (205) and locating the end of tapeline (102), as shown in Figure 3 stopper (9), the arrangement is completed by resilient support spring (14) between supporter (201) and prominent pin (111) of the stopper (9), to control the operation.
The operational result anc characteristic of this invention is able to be described as follows: The usual measuring tapes have limited function and are inconvenient in use, and require repeated re-checking.
This invention provides a flash light casing (1) on the top of the body (101) and it is possible to measure with ease at night or in a dark place.
Particularly by operating the stopper (9) in order to fix the drawn tapeline (102) when it is needed, it is possible to preserve the measured size, and then there is no trouble in needing to re-measure and note down the result every time and therefore this reduces mistakes of measurement and increases efficiency of working.
Looking into this specifically, the tapeline (102) which passed through the interior of the stopper (9) is able to be drawn out always, and with regard to this measuring tape, the jaw (10) of the stopper (9), as seen in the second figure, compresses the tapeline (102) by elasticity of spring (14) during this time and pressure is provided against supporting jaw (203). However when the stopper (9) is not pulled upward, it is difficult to draw the tape out and there is noise.
If at the same time as the tapeline (102) is pulled out, the stopper (9) is pushed upward a bit, this reduces some of the spring (14) pressure from the tapeline (102) and the tapeline (102) can be drawn out smoothly.
And then after having measured the required size the stopper (9) can be reset by returning it to its original position, and so the original spring pressure is regenerated and the tapeline (102) is stopped through taking pressure between jaw (10) and supporting jaw (203).
Thereafter, the tapeline (102) can be re-inserted in the case by slightly pressing the stopper (9) again, and the tapeline (102) will be rolled in by its own spring.
In this embodiment, the measuring tape as shown in the sixth figure is located conveniently in the inner palm of the hand of the user.
A simple operation with thumb and the second finger is always possible and therefore this is an ergonomically good design.
