Abstract

A builder's square comprises a pair of arms 1, 2, each of which has a depending lip 3 which will rest against a respective edge of the two rows of brickwork 4, 5 at a corner. A pin 6 projects upwardly directly at the corner point and strings 7 from this pin are aligned with direction marking grooves 8 formed in the top faces of the arms 1 and 2. The other ends of the lines 7 can be fixed by pegs and these lines then define the boundary edge of each wall section 4 or 5. <IMAGE>

Description

Improvements Relating to Builder's Squares There is a need for a builder's square which can be used by bricklayers to enable them to create a properly formed right-angle at the corner of a building and so that the lines of bricks run out correctly from those corners.
According to the present invention there is provided a builder's square in which the two arms of the square each have a lip depending from the outer lower edge thereof, such that the two lips define inner faces which converge to a right angle, a pin socket is provided in the top face of the corner of the square at a point directly above the point of convergence of the inner faces of the two lips, and direction markings are formed on the top faces of said two arms to define direction lines leading from the socket, which lines lie directly above the inner faces of the two lips.
Such a square can be laid on to a corner of brickwork which has already been formed, so that the lower lips lie against the two lines of brickwork. A string fixed to a pin projecting from the socket can then be laid out in both directions so that it is aligned with the direction lines. This will then define the line for the extending row of brickwork in each of the two directions. The pin for mounting in the socket advantageously incorporates a ring for receipt of one end of a line-defining string.
Ideally the direction markings will comprise lines or grooves formed on the top faces of the two arms. It will be appreciated, however, that such lines need not necessarily be continuous. Alternatively or additionally, further upstanding pins can be provided as the direction markers so as to define the desired lines from the socket at the corner.
For the purpose of bricklaying the builder's square is likely to be rather bulky. It is preferred therefore that the two arms should be releasably secured together. In this case the two arms could be formed fron a common extrusion. The two arms may be engaged by locating members and held in place by a bolt.
The invention may be performed in various ways and a preferred embodiment thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corner of brickwork with a builder's square of this invention laid thereon; Figure 1A illustrates a detail of Figure 1; Figure 2 is a plan view of the central portion of the square shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is an end view, partially in section, of the square viewed in the direction of the arrow III illustrated in Figure 2.
The builder's square shown in Figure 1 comprises a pair of arms 1, 2, each of which has a depending lip 3 which will rest against a respective edge of the two rows of brickwork 4, 5 at a corner. Figure 13 shows how the string 7 might be attached to a removable pin 6 having an eye 6A. The socket for the pin 6 can be made big enough to receive two such pins, to be laid in the two directions for the wall sections 4 and 5.
As can be seen from Figures 2 and 3, the two arms 1 and 2 are separably secured by a releasable bolt 9 and are held in the correct attitude by locating studs 10 secured to one of the arms and locating into complementary holes in the other arm. By releasing the bolt 9 the arms 1 and 2 may be separated and laid side by side for ease of transportation. This form of construction also allows the two arms of the square to be formed from a common aluminium extrusion.

Claims (1)

1. A builder's square in which the two arms of the square each have a lip depending from the outer lower edge thereof, such that the two lips define inner faces which converge to a right angle, a pin socket is provided in the top face of the corner of the square at a point directly above the point of convergence of the inner faces of the two lips, and direction markings are formed on the top faces of said two arms to define direction lines leading from the socket, which lines lie directly above the inner faces of the two lips.
9. A builder's square according to claim 1, including a pin mounted in the socket to project upwardly from the top face of the square.
3. A builder's square according to claim 2, wherein the pin incorporates a ring for receipt of one end of a line-defining string.
4. A builder's square according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the direction markings comprise lines or grooves formed on the top faces of the two arms.
5. A builder's square according to claim any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the direction markings comprise further upstanding pins lying along the desired lines from the socket at the corner.
6. A builder's square according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the two arms are releasably secured together.
7. A builder's square according to claim 6, wherein the two arms are formed from a common extrusion.
8. A builder's square according to claim 6 or claim 7, wherein the two arms are engaged by locating members and held in place by a bolt.
9. A builder's square substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
